 Overview
 Description
Most of the entire boardwalk is abandoned.. There are a few seasonal shops. Much of the back of the boardwalk buildings have been painted with murals in an attempt to "beautify ", the abandoned casino is in rough shape, as per the pics, trees growing inside, Palace amusements, while fenced, is accessible. We ran out of time to go in but see Lisa's pics of the interior on the LDB.Convention center is built on conrete pilings, apparently still used . Some older structures which are hard to identify their purpose. Not much left open, but you can still eat at HoJo's or have a beer at the Stone Pony. Check out their sign, they get major acts in there, the place was made famous by Bruce Sprinsteen I believe. Overall little police prescence, made possible by no interest in the boardwalk, and major police interest in the rest of Asbury which seems perfectly divided between beachfront condos and a total ghetto. Some politician royally screwed this place.

The derelict high rise.. the epitome of poor urban planning. Have a beer at the famous "Stone Pony". The casino. Convention hall. Palace amusements. The boardwalk itself, some of which is being fixed. the carousel house. The carousel house, amusement house, and convention center are all very old.

     History
Asbury park used to be a seaside destination as early as 1880 or so. About the late '80's, competition became fierce with other destinations, so interest began to decline. There are a lot of interesting buildings, and when I was there, a civil war battle broke out about 3/4 mile down the beach in the "nice " section! See pics. Check out Lisa Lambs "Palace Amusements" in the LDB. Good stuff.
