The Connecticut Yankee (CY) nuclear power plant, located in Haddam Neck, Connecticut, began commercial operation in 1968 and produced more than 110 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity during its 28-year operating history. In 1996, the CY Board of Directors voted to permanently close and decommission the power plant. After two years of planning and preparation, actual decommissioning began. Decommissioning was finished in 2007.

To terminate its NRC license, CY must decommission the plant, clean the site, and demonstrate to the NRC the plant site meets the NRC's criteria for release for either restricted or unrestricted use. CY intends to meet the lower radiation levels for unrestricted use. Connecticut Yankee and CLF Ventures, a non-profit affiliate of the Conservation Law Foundation have announced that they will be working together to develop and implement an open, community involved process for the ultimate disposition of a significant portion of the 500-plus acre CY site for conservation. Click here to learn more. A segment of the land will be preserved for future use for the town of Haddam. A possible gas-powered electric generating plant has been proposed for the site, but no decision has been made. CY will keep a portion of the land for its dry cask fuel storage facility.
