It was once a huge complex. At one time there were 32 buildings...all connected via patient and/or service tunnels. Contained a lot of graffiti, fire damage and water damage ...The patient wards were empty, and all administrative/therapy buildings were trashed beyond recognition. The C buildings were the oldest. Sadly all of these buildings are now gone.

Death: Environmental inspector is killed in a fall at Byberry Feb 17th, 2005
An officer of an environmental services company inspecting a property for demolition yesterday on the grounds of the old Philadelphia State Hospital (Byberry) in the Far Northeast fell to his death after a stairway gave way, police said. The victim was identified as James Lowe III, 49, of Spring City. Lowe worked for LVI Environmental Services Inc., a nationwide abatement and demolition company. The company's Web site identifies Lowe as president of the company's Philadelphia branch office, based in Downingtown. Lowe and another employee, David Pearson, 38, were surveying from floor to floor in a Byberry building in the 2600 block of Southampton Road when the accident occurred. Lowe fell two floors, police said. Pearson called 911 on his cellular phone. Fire paramedics pronounced Lowe dead at the scene at 10:50 a.m.

When it first closed it was beautiful inside. The older buildings had really nice architecture, the newer buildings were interesting for their sheer vastness. The tunnel system was a fun and convenient way to get from building to building. Unfortunately, in its last few years it had been tagged to death and several fires had damaged (superficially) several halls. To many it looked like a war zone. It also had its own internal security force! Nothing left now besides memories....

Originally opened by the City of Philadelphia in 1906, it was taken over by the State in 1938 for budgetary concerns. Closed in 1990 for pretty much the same reason. Completely demolished in 2006 by Geppert Brothers and Delta Removal for Westrum Byberry LLP.
