     Interesting Features
The best graffiti spot ever in Canada, maybe more. Provided interesting exploration. Currently the site access is easy, just walk in the courtyard (but the buildings are now lofts so getting inside will be slightly harder!).

     History
First factory to be built in Canada, this building has a huge historic value and even an architectural one. Too bad they're using it for upscale condos, a museum would have been the right use.

    Tap:
Construction began on the refinery in 1854. In 1871, George Drummond, manager of the refinery, designed and built a new wing east of the existing buildings. After closing in 1876 due to a depression, the refinery reopened in 1879 and began expansion and modernization of its facilities. A new refinery was built in 1892 and in 1908 the original refinery was torn down and a new six-story building was constructed on the old building's foundations. A seven story building was added in 1912 and a new boiler house and packing building built in 1925. The refinery closed in 1979 and in 1982 the site was subject to partial demolition. In 1999 controversy arose over proposals to convert refinery into condominiums.

    Architect: Ostell, John
Alteration Architect: George A. Drummond (1871)

Was partially demolished and renovated. Currently open an active for mixed use. Office space, retail, condos, and the silos have climbing walls inside of them...,.

    * Exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Archaeology, Pointe-a-Calliere,
    from November 25, 2003 - April 25, 2004
    ^^^^^^^^^
As part of the 150th anniversary celebrations, Redpath Sugars is currently sponsoring a special exhibition at the Pointe-à-Callière, the Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History. The exhibition, called Dreams and Realities Along the Lachine Canal, examines the industrial and social history of the canal and surrounding working-class neighborhood, as well as the canal’s importance in establishing Montreal as a major industrial center. The exhibition also profiles five local industries of the time (1850-1950) including Redpath Sugars (originally known as Canada Sugar Refinery). Images and artefacts from the Redpath Sugar Museum in Toronto form part of the display.
     Future Plans
Site renovation started in 2001 but is still underway and is far from beeing finished. About 40% of the remaining buildings got demolished earlier this year. As of November 2004, renovations are almost finished on the buildings facing Lachine Canal. The buildings facing St-Patrick street are still to be renovated (to be transformed into a parking lot and more lofts).
