In the 60's, the threat of a nuclear holocaust was hanging over the heads of North Americans. In southern Ontario, Hamilton was a prime target for an enemy strike with its steel mills and harbour. Prevailing winds would blow fallout to the north, into the Golden Triangle, affecting Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph. The thought was that if this was to happen, a command center for the local government would need to be built. If possible, rescue operations for Hamilton would be staged from this command bunker. In 1966, MEGHQ Freeport was built in order to coordinate other local governments via radio in the case of a nuclear attack. It was utilized for this purpose, as well as office space, training and storage off and on until Waterloo Region built it's new city hall and the extra space was no longer needed. In 2003, the Cambridge Rowing Club purchased the property and is currently renovating it for the purposes of turning it into a storage facility and clubhouse.
