What the education system forgot
< on 3/4/2012 7:26 AM >

Just outside a regional preserve sits an old mining settlement turned cattle ranch that was later left to a school district. Full of amazing historical pieces of farming equipment and odds and ends from a lifetime ago, this land sits virtually untouched except for the wayward cow. I'm sure the intention was to build this into an interactive ghost town of sorts for the district kids to learn how life was once less sophisticated but alas it seems the educational system has forgotten to teach of this local history. People seem to drive by this place on their way to hike some popular trails but everyone just ignores this little lot of treasure because of the "keep out, property of .... school district".

#4 is the shiz, not because I bleed Ford blue but, because your composition and the lighting are excellent. Good work.

Forgive me if this sounds rude, I love your photos, but I would love, even more, to know what you're looking at. I'm a big picture kinda guy. Maybe get a few shots of where you are? I dunno, I just saw the side of a barn and then a REALLY zoomed out shot of the location. The shots themselves are fantastic though.

Want to improve your photography?

... I take very little as being rude ... A lot of the time I don't post overall pics because it gives away where it is but at this place the buildings didn't really do a whole lot for me but what they held did. Here are a few that show some of the buildings on the property a little better ...

Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

- Boosted302 - Thank you ... I do bleed Ford blue as my Grandpa worked on their transition line for over 30 years and rebuilt classics in his spare time so that's all I knew for a VERY long time .... thus don't be surprised if you see more cause I keep my eyes peeled for them.
I'll share my "Legatar" with y'all.

Thanks Vexx.

B&C- we hike in the area a lot and have ventured mine a little bit but parts were under serious restructuring by the regional parks.

Wow, these photos are excellent.

To be honest, I think the entire series is fantastic. I really like the composition and the type of post processing you used. Would you mind shring a little bit of your technique with us?

What a shame. This place was occupied for the 40 years I've been going by it until a few years ago when the School District picked it up. Why wouldnt they rent it out, a little revenue and someone onsite to preserve a cool old property.
All the nearby mines were sealed and some gated by 1990. The mine museum and tours are actually pretty good. Theres various renovation projects going on now so some of its closed but supposed to reopen this spring.

Thank you... I'm so glad you enjoyed them. I currently only shoot on jpeg because I have yet to invest in an uber large SD card > dump into file folder > scan through for the ones I want to edit > open in Picasa > adjust exposure as required, crop if necessary, occasionally add a light vignette, add border and save. Ive dabbled with some of the other features like cross processing but I tend to revert back to the original. I'm contemplating lightroom but been dragging my feet cause I'm a bit of a cheap bastard and PhotoShop baffels me.

Finally got out here, and I'm so going back. I took quite a few pics last night using the harvest moon for lighting.(mostly) Tried to do some light painting in a couple of shots with mixed results. I'm still new to extended exposures, so some of the trees got blurred by the wind. This is the handful of semi-good ones I got. Huge thanks to photloose for staying up past your bedtime to be my guide. If it wasn't for you; I'd probably still be out there looking for the place!

I am totally loving the rainbow light painting in #6... You're going to have to teach me that. And of course I love #3 of my favorite ford tractor. Well done Sir!
