| | | | Thought Excercise: Door Removal < on 11/3/2011 3:53 PM >
| | | First off, let me apologize if this is not the correct spot for this thread and if this is something that shouldn't be posted. I'm hoping to cash in on people's experiences or words of wisdom with this hypothetical scenario.
Thought exercise of the day: You are in a room that is approximately 4 feet by 4 feet. Inside this room are two locked doors. Both appear to be the push bar style handles but you don't know for certain as the handles are on the other side of the doors from you. One of the doors has the hydraulic door closer but the screws on it are either inaccessible or completely stripped. Fortunately, the hinges are on your side and you can easily remove the pins from the hinges and get a little 'wiggle room' with the door and the door frame. How would you remove either of the doors without damaging them or the frame? Thanks in advance! -SJ

| | | Is the hypothetical latch on the handle, or the top and bottom?

| | | If the doors are locked, fuck the doors! The pins are coming out and those doors are coming down. Let them fall, I'm getting out.

There is no latch on the side of the door facing you. On one of the doors, you can see bolt heads that indicate that the push bar is in the middle of the door but there is not indication that there is a latch at the top or bottom of the door. Also, the two doors are on different walls. They are single doors, not the double door design.

Once you get the pins out, how would you get leverage to pry the doors your way? The space between the door and the jam is too small for fingers. Tools would be needed, but what kind of tool could you use to pry the door back without damaging the door or the jam/frame? -SJ

They appear to be solid wood. Pushing isn't a problem, they open towards you, its a matter of finding something to grab on to and then pulling. Problem is, there is nothing to grab onto. -SJ

Don't you have any tools with you at all? I mean there are standard tools as I showed you, if I go in something like this, I might have a little more with me that will produce something to grab.

I had some tools with me but not the ones that I needed apparently. We were prepared enough to get past the outside door. We weren't expecting two others when we got in. We were just scouting last night. I'm glad we did scout it out so I can plan accordingly when we go back. -SJ

| | | Pull the pins on the hinges, then use a fat screwdriver to separate the hinges and rotate the door on the push bar rods. You will need some leverage as the hinge side of the door is not beveled and will rub against the frame on the way out. Good luck.

| | | How about this. Take some sheet metal and cut it as an L Stick one part in the door where it closes. If it's an emergency exit, you will be able to pull the sheet metal towards you and open the door.

| | | Pull the pins. Kick the door to first loosen the rust/humidity grip. Then pull off your sock (hopefully you have tall socks in good condition) and put some loose change or misc stuff into it. Push the closed end with the stuff in it under the door with with your keys and hope it all binds when you pull it back towards you. Or maybe find a piece of metal and shape it into an L. Lay the shape flat on the floor then stand up the end and pull it back towards you.

Sure there is, you just have to bring it with you. and Apply tape to [the door] carefully edge to edge (Seams can fuck this up if the suction cup is stiff), wet the suction cup lightly with your water bottle, and pull that sumbitch out.
