| | | Draining after it has snowed? < on 10/25/2011 11:00 PM >
| | | So a friend and I have been planning on going draining this Saturday for two weeks, the only problem, it is supposed to snow tomorrow. While this is Colorado and you can never truly predict the weather blah blah blah. But if it does end up snowing do you think it would be safe to go draining on Saturday? We are supposed to get around 6 inches of snow and here is the forecast for the week.
So waddya think? http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=23227 and here is the DB entry for the drain if that helps at all [last edit 10/25/2011 11:50 PM by urbexkeith - edited 3 times]

| | | I wouldn't do it. The drains aren't going anywhere - it won't hurt to wait for better weather.

| | | This was in February so it was alright. If there's a chance of melting, as it seems there is for you, wait. Fast melting snow will have the same consequences as rain.

Well I am hoping that by friday night all the snow will be melted (which around here it should be) and that by midday Saturday the drain will be mostly cleared out. I think what we will do is just go visit the infall and play it from there, the system is huge and I am assuming it will be cleared out by saturday. | | | I also was curious about this, I live in minneapolis so snow is something we have to deal with here. I would think as long as its a cold day (under 37 degrees) you should be find.

| | | Only one way to find out. You could also wait until after dark when the temperature drops back down to freezing, though we discovered this plan does not work well with a bottleneck system. A snow melt of a few inches can make a series of connecting tunnels unpassable. This is the lowest I've ever seen it.
That first dark watermark (a few inches above the current level) is the average depth. The second mark (about 18" above current depth) is the bottleneck storage depth(the highest the water can be while not overflowing the exit pipe) which looks like my boots wouldn't cut it and I'd have to upgrade to waders right? Wrong, if the water was that high, the tunnel that connects to the tunnel that connects to the outfall I crawled through to get into here would be flooded. I wouldn't be able to get in or out. There's risers and smaller pipes that prevent it from draining out more than this. You can see the spring flood depth, at my neck level and 100 year flood mark about two feet above my head too. | | | When I started seriously draining a couple years ago, I did my first drains with about a foot of snow on the ground. Granted, I did them at night, so there wasn't any melting, and the levels were low. Worked great for me! Winter is draining season in my opinion. It's warm underground!

We went to the drain in question Tuesday afternoon to watch the levels rise as the snow started falling. Even though it was only a light snow/rain the water level still rose quickly. Everything should be melted by Saturday but if not it's going to be a slog. (P.S. be careful posting where and when you are going in the public area)

| | | as long as it stays below freezing there's absolutely no risk in draining when it snows. In fact, winter is probably one of the best times to go draining. Its cold as fuck outside, but nice and toasty underground Best to play it safe and avoid trips during the spring thaw, but nothing wrong with a bit of snow. winter can make for some interesting ice formations too!

I bet some of those formations could look sweet with some flash gels ot colored lighting! I am going to have to try this this winter.

| | | Yep, MUCH lower risk of getting washed out in the winter (basically nil if it's well below freezing), cool ice formations, and it can be a good 30-40 degrees warmer below ground than above. The only problem comes when you get completely drenched, have to swim the outfall, or fall through the ice on the river outside...makes the walk to the car a whole lot longer.

Draining is best in the winter, especially here in etown, as some of our drains can be +20 underground , when its -40 outside like it was today lol [last edit 1/16/2012 10:37 AM by Juggz419 - edited 1 times]
