| | | I have the same mask, and in the respirator carterage manual it says it can help against anthrax. Pretty sure it can handle asbestos.

Yeah, just like to pros. *dusting self off after rolling on the ground from laughter* If you had done abatements you would know better. You CAN see it in the air along with other airborne particles, just shine a flashlight or laser through the air.

I am done with this pointless argument. never seen a level of immaturity this bad... there's no point being on the forum if you are just going to try to discourage others. people will keep doing it regardless

| | | I've been looking into getting a respirator myself, but must admit I really know nothing about them - or at least not well enough to make a wise purchase. Reading over this thread has really helped me, so thanks everyone!

Get a P100 respirator. Make sure that it fits well. When you gently cover the air intakes you should feel no air slipping through your mask. Same when you cover the exhaust and gently breathe out; no air should be slipping out. I have a medium and I definitely thought at first it was too small, but after multiple tests it seems to fit fine.
I wanted to ask, what size did everyone else find themselves wearing? At the hardware stores, it seems like they only sell mediums anyway. You would have to get a large online unless there is another specialty store? Either way, I'd love to know how large the actual "large" respirators are?

Now when you cover the exhaust and breath out, the air has to come out somewhere. This is actually how soldiers make sure that no contaminated air is in the mask. When you hold the exhaust close, and you breath out, the air will go out between your face and the mask. When you inhale and you close the filter with your hand, no air should get in it and the mask should be sucked on your face. There are always major problems with people that have a beard, so you really need to check if it fits the right way.

Correcto, I meant breath out lightly, but you are right. No need to test with the exhale, you only need to try the inhale method. And if you have a crazy beard it's going to be tough to fit it yourself.

Yeah, bandanas, bananas, and t-shirts won't do much for you in regards to asbestos and black mold... maybe some bigger dust particles.
What size respirators do you guys wear? The mediums found in most stores or did you purchase online sizes? I've never tried on a large, so I'm not sure if it would be too big for my face or fit better.

| | | Everyone seems to know asbestos is bad, but it seems not many people know more than that. You can learn a lot about it on wikipedia, but basically it's a strong, heat resistant silicate material that has been used in almost every part of construction untill it was mostly banned in 1989. Asbestos is usually well contained in the products it was used in, but gets released in dust when those products are cut, broken, drilled etc. If you breath in asbestos, you pretty much keep it for life. The tiny crystals stick into the inner walls of your lungs and eventually get surrounded by scar tissue. This scar tissue will eventually make it very difficult to breath. If that's not enough, there's also mesothelioma and lung cancer to worry about. Wearing a respirator is handy when you might be exposed to asbestos, but remember we're talking about microscopic crystals that float around in the air. They'll also lodge in your clothing, hair, etc. When you finish exploring for the day and go home and hug your kids, congratulations, you just exposed them to the same nastiness. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbestos A gallery of images showing common items made with asbestos. http://www.hse.gov...bestos/gallery.htm Edit: For those wondering about respirators, make sure what you get has a purple lable indication protection from asbestos or you're wasting your time.
