Denbigh Asylum, North Wales

Seems like I've been on some sort of abandoned place binge recently, and it was only a matter of time before I visited an asylum.

North Wales Hospital (a.k.a. Denbigh Asylum or Denbigh Mental) was opened in 1848 and is seen as a classic example of a Victorian asylum. It was closed in phases between 1991 and 2002. Lying empty since and being victim to general vandalism, neglect and arson.

I remember when I was in school aged 14 when friends showed up with blueprints of nearby Denbigh asylum that they found in the basement there after a visit the previous weekend. The place had been on my radar since then, but despite having actually lived in the town, and spending countless drunken nights at my friend's house directly adjacent, it's taken 8 years since I saw those blueprints for me to finally get around to seeing it.

With news this week that demolition teams had moved in, I thought I should hop to it and see this asylum pretty sharpish.

In the three days since Wye Valley Demolition had moved in, they seem to have sealed off the main building at the front of the site (not impossible to get into it by any means) and will probably destroy most of the internal parts and retain the shell of the building.

Anyway, photographing decay, in daylight, is something almost completely alien to me. I've found that photographing in conditions that aren't pitch black like in drains is quite challenging, so please excuse my rather average attempts the same way you would forgive a new member!

In its' heyday...

It's an asylum. UrbEx laws dictate a photo of the morgue slab...

Go and find these guys online and ask them on their website's guestbook if they make a habit of vandalising listed buildings. I have!

Notice the new fencing...

Thanks for reading.

Hello, I used to sing for the awesome heavy metal band Nitro. These days I do UrbEx!

Looks amazing, though very trashed. We have nothing like this in Australia (except for Larundel which is trashed beyond recognition now and about to be redeveloped). Yes a morgue slab pic is always a must!

I'm the opposite to you: great at taking pics in broad daylight, hopeless in the dark

Awesome stuff, they just closed a 100 year old asylum back home in Lexington, KY unfortunately they instantly set off trying to convert it to a community college so I havent been able to get in. But an interesting sidenote, while breaking ground for the renovation the construction crew discovered somewhere around 300 bodies buried on the grounds in unmarked graves.. creepy

I really like your last photo.. its got great colors

We're sorta like 7-Eleven. We're not always doing business, but we're always open.
