i am the other yourself. "Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name. Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors. The voice might be one and the same. I've heard it too many times to ignore it. It's something that I'm supposed to be." http://www.flickr....orers/collections/ |

| | | I have a lot of history with this place. I was exploring it before it became a museum. The cemetery is something new.

| | | Roman, you must be an old geezer like I am if you were exploring this before it was a museum? I had read that the K9 cemetary was vandalized and overgrown, so I was shocked, but pleased to see it was nice and clean. It was however locked up tight, it might have been cleaned up just prior to Memorial day?

I was gonna post one of me with a full erection and an American flag flying from it. I figured that was to disrespectful, plus I couldn't find a flag small enough...........

| | | Here's a picture of the pop-up gun that fits in the #1 picture of the post. This gun has a broken bracket at the back, damaged from war. Note the bullet marks on the tube. This picture is in the Philippines on Corregidor Island in Manila Bay. You can search images in Google to find a lot of tourist shots. They kept their guns in place as it's part of history. We removed ours in San Pedro, Oahu and other areas for scrap metal since they were never used in wartime. So all we have is a big circular cement pattern to look at. 1.

Well, they kept their (*our*) guns in-place because at least some of the batteries remained in a caretaker status, and many were in very remote areas. Then starting I think in the 1990s or 200os the Philippine gov't realized that these old Japanese & US fortifications & gun emplacements were tourist attractions -- military historians from the USA, etc. were shelling out big bucks to come to the Philippines for a week or two. Unfortunately, I guess over the past decade or so, some of the locals have been stealing some of the remains for scrap-metal value. Here in the USA, Battery Townsley at Fort Cronkhite (Harbor Defenses of San Francisco) should be 're-armed' with a 16" gun tube this year. Here's my photo of the gun tube as it sits in the Nevada desert.
And on an equally important note, the Presidio of San Francisco Army Post did have an unofficial pet cemetery, the use of which has expanded after the post closed:
