| | | Location: Marxergasse 17, 1030 Vienna Sofiensaal (or Sofiensäle) is probably my favorite place to visit and shoot. Unfortunately the rate of deterioration lately has made is slightly dangerous to visit, so watch your step! Here's some information about it's history: http://en.wikipedi...p?title=Sofiensaal It's destruction has been planned on and off since 2006, but (fortunately for us) the situation is quite complicated. Political, financial and emotional issues are still unresolved, though i've heard it's mainly because many Viennese are quite upset that they want to tear this beauty down and put up more crappy hotels and so luckily via voicing their opinions to the local government, the building is still (as of my last visit end of 2010) standing. Every once in awhile the company who owns it installs a huge wooden support beams to ensure it doesn't just collapse on itself. Last time i checked (about 6 months ago) the whole inner-facade is covered with support structures and netting to keep pigeons out. Also there's an awesome (and official) sign which says something to the effect of "you shouldn't be here, but if you are, be careful!". I'll try to post pics when i'm back home. If you do happen to visit this gem, you may have luck and find the front door already unlocked (happened to me once out of about 10 visits over the last 8 years). While visiting, be aware that about 10-15 6+ story apartment buildings have a complete view of most of your movement, though i've never had the cops show up or anybody harass me. On a couple visits i have also bumped into other avid photographers. Here's some beautiful pictures a friend of mine shot a few years back: http://www.pbase.c.../austriasopiensale [last edit 4/8/2011 12:37 AM by herpyderpy - edited 1 times]

| | | Shots (without people) from a shoot in 2006 (before the netting around the inner sections appeared): Huge, long blood-red draperies still hang in some areas:
Rusty old piano always ends up being a favorite prop:
View inside where pool used to be from back area:
2nd or 3rd floor. Straight ahead and to the right are neighboring apartment buildings.

| | | Wait a minute - Sophiensäle are still standing? I though they tore them down like years ago. Havent been around 3rd district a lot to be honest. Just wrote the buliding off as "burst into flames and gone". Shame on me.
Love what you did with the place!!! |

They repeatedly tried to tear it down from what I've heard, but it's such a cultural icon that the Viennese are fighting to keep it standing. I haven't been in about a year but I have a feeling it's still standing. Maybe we could go this weekend? Last time I finally found access to the basement but I didn't have any light to investigate deeper.
