| | | old sugar mill < on 4/1/2011 3:48 AM >
| | | the old sugar mill i was fortunate enough to go to this site with my work. my luck continued when i was given full access by our venue contact. the current property manager mentioned to me that they offered photography tours a few times a year where they even let people go so far as the sixth floor. she told me the site was train freighted over from Utah, brick by brick, in the late 1800's. which peaked my interest in the its history. here's some of what i learned: Old Sugar Mill History: In the 1920s the New Holland Land Company began subdividing the tracts in the area and formally established the town as an unincorporated community. This town is unique among small California towns in that many of the families who initially settled the area are still present, thus lending a small-town and almost East Coast charm to the community. The Old Sugar Mill was originally owned by the Amalgamated Sugar Company which was founded in 1897 in Logan Utah and is now located in Boise Idaho. Because of blight and drought, only four of Amalgamated sugar factories operated in 1931. One of those factories, “The Smithfield” Utah factory, closed permanently in 1933 and moved to California. The factory was brought piece by piece via railroad. The factory began its operation on July 31, 1935. Amalgamated sold the factory to American Crystal Sugar Company in 1936. The American Crystal Sugar Company sold the plant in 1982 to the Delta Sugar Company. The Delta Sugar plant closed in 1993.The Yolo Shortline Railroad Company had a railroad that ended at the Old Sugar Mill and would have sacks of sugar loaded onto the cars to be transported. It took over a year of negotiations with Union Pacific to acquire the Shortline. It stopped running when the Old Sugar Mill closed in 1993. Plans were made to renovate the building and create a facility for wine tasting and a wine crush in 2000. 1. No Trespassing 2. skeletal interior 3. do you like your scalps standard or jello? 4. 5. moss gloves 6. pepsi 7. drawer of rust 8. evidence of owl residents 9. a shirt, a vacuum, a lawnmower & a puddle. 10. lights 11. holes 12. conveyor belt 13. near the top 14. some more holes 15. do you take one horns or two horns with that? 16. thanks for smoking.
this place is currently being renovated, there are businesses in place, patrons, employees & security. the wine tasting is active & they host large events. while the areas in my photos are still in their original "as left" condition much this site is currently in use. all entrances to the interiors depicted are closed, locked & alarmed. the main six story building on the property has black mold like growths on the walls, there are exposure to chemical warning signs, the floors are wet & stinky, as well as there are steps missing on the staircases. i was very much told i was at my own risk when i received access. that being said, to those of you whom are still intrigued & find this place please be respectful & contact the site manager. -madcap

It's a cool place with a lot of history (check out their website at http://oldsugarmill.com/). If they let you have a free tour of the old mill building, make sure you stop into the wine tasting rooms and buy a bottle or two. Giving them a little business can go a long way.
