I've been thinking about trying this out with some long elastics to waterproof our legs, but I'm wondering about a couple cons of using these.
For one, it seems like they will compromise foot grip.
And two, it seems like they would be readily prone to wearing through and ripping while being walked on.
I got the idea from reading the Drains entry in the UER Encyclopedia, and I'm just looking for some advice from people who have tried it.

Like Loki said, garbage bags plus duct tape will sorta work.
But for 20$ a set of hip / chest waders are worth it. Plus the keep you from flooding when you slide an unexpected extra 8" down into drain-muck.

I agree. But if you do decide to use the bags, you're probably best off wearing them inside some cheap rubber rain boots so they don't break or slip.

Any home improvement store will carry them. Generally 50 or 60 gallon bags referred to as 'contractor bags' and for job site cleanup or yard work. And they indicate the thickness on the box like '5 mil'.

That's closer to what I had in mind when I made this thread.
Too bad it's no concern of mine anymore. I caved and bought hip waders from Dick's for $45 last week.

I once tried this by duct-taping large garbage bags on my feet (one each). The distance I was hoping to cover with these was only less than 20 meters, but it did not work. This cost me basically brand new 300 € phone (which was in my trouser pocket - dumbass me).
