| | | Or it could just be that people who lightly hop or quickly scale down from ledges with very little trouble see them as much smaller obstacles. After you do a similar thing several hundreds or thousands of times it become less of an issue. I think this is a far likelier theory. The other being... very conspiratorial, and ever so slightly fanciful. =D Matt told me a little about you the other day. I was looking forward to hitting up some shafts with you but it looks like between your schedule and mine we may not get the opportunity. Either way, best of luck bro.

| | | Yeah unless you can get to some of the mines before Jan18, then FUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. That's my date of departure for basic. Seems like you I could have learned alot in person from you like I do with Frank and Matt, lol. WishIwouldhavestarteddoingexploringwithminesyearsago/10 Also how much would a used setup run for Harnesses? Wondering if it's worth it to snag them before I go or just wait.

| | | Why do I always find these threads when they're just threading out?! Hahaha. Guess I'm just not looking. First, the drop was really a good bit more than 5ft. I'd say like 7-8'. And if I remember, it didn't have anything to stand on the bottom 3 or so ft, making it harder for the last little bit. BUT! It really wasn't a big deal at all! BTW, it was the one with the small rope OpenTrackRacer, if that helps any. As for the body anchor thing, I'm for it...on a short drop. Though, I think at the point when you were ready to go down, we realized you could see the shaft was completely filled-in. I would guess that it'd be pretty difficult, if not dangerous to try to dig through all that dirt and debris to get through. Wouldn't it be easier to just (edit!) under the concrete foundation of the vertical.....oops, did I just come up with a mischievously brilliant idea?! Why didn't we think of that at the time?! ...Waterloo, here we come. [last edit 12/6/2010 11:09 PM by DesertRatMatt - edited 1 times]

I don't know that we have definitive data on just how filled in it is. Such as, when pouring dirt down a slanted shaft like that, the section towards the top would tend not to fill in as tightly, or as solidly. I was hoping to get at the "lower end" of the fill dirt and dig on the higher edge to see if I could dig through a ways and punch a hole through it. It was still relatively fresh, and therefore easier to move than something that's had years to settle into place. (or at least, I think... it looked soft to me). But, I think we may have another plan in the works as well.
(we do not speak of digging under footings..that's just despicable!

| | | Ok, the drop-off in the Waterman is actually only about 6.5' instead of the 7-8' that I remember; I just checked the video footage. It's funny how we remember stuff differently when we get home! Here's my footage: (fixed link) http://www.youtube...atch?v=jLrZ73g2waM Here's a funny clip from the trip: http://www.youtube...atch?v=PM_8iz9gxew [last edit 12/15/2010 5:49 PM by DesertRatMatt - edited 2 times]
