«Trois jeunes hommes tués par le passage d'un train aux petites heures du matin sous l'échangeur Turcot».

Personne qu'on connaît j'espère. Il va probablement devenir plus difficile d'aller se promener par-là. Les accès sont nombreux et certains sont quasi impossibles à fermer, mais y'aura sans doute plus de rondes de sécurité.

[Media] Three teens killed exploring abandoned railyard

Vandalism didn't pay off in this incident...

Three youths killed by Via train may not have heard it coming
INGRID PERITZ
MONTREAL— From Monday's Globe and Mail

The five teens were walking along the railway tracks, probably to spray graffiti, and may have never heard the passenger train coming.

Within seconds, three of the youths were fatally struck, and now police are weighing possible mischief charges against the two survivors.

The five young men, aged 17 to 19, were out amid a concrete tangle of expressway ramps and pillars that are a frequent canvas for graffiti painters in Montreal. According to police, they were struck by the Via Rail train under the city’s high-traffic Turcot interchange at about 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

“It’s an area with a lot of concrete so they probably didn’t hear or see the train coming,” said Constable Danny Richer of the Montreal police. “They may have only seen it at the last minute.”

Two passenger cars, which police say are part of their investigation, were left behind in a parking lot near the site of the deaths. On Sunday, a palm-leaf crucifix lay between the cars. Inside one of the vehicles was an orange spray-paint can and several cans of beer. In another car, a chemistry textbook.

Police would not release the name of the youths, but they were known in Montreal’s tight-knit community of graffiti artists. Sterling Downey, founder of an annual graffiti-culture convention in Montreal, said one of the victims was a prolific graffiti artist who was active for more than a year.

Like all those who engage in the practice, they know what they’re doing is illegal and brings risks, he said. Passenger trains are quieter than freight trains, which may account for the youth’s failure to respond.

“If you’re ever painting graffiti around trains you’re aware that passenger trains are the sneakiest because they’re quiet and travel at greater speeds,” Mr. Downey said. The din of expressway traffic would muffle the sound of the train even further.

Normally, no train should have been travelling on those tracks in the middle of the night. The Montreal-bound train that struck the youths had left Toronto on Saturday night; it was delayed three hours because of a separate fatality involving a Go Transit passenger train near Toronto, Via Rail said.

The Via train was delayed further as a result of the Montreal deaths. Its 45 passengers were bussed into Montreal’s Central Station, arriving at about 6 a.m. instead of midnight as scheduled.

Rail officials said it’s also difficult to judge a train’s speed. When facing an oncoming train, one can get the impression it’s travelling more slowly than in reality, said Julie Sénécal of CN, which owns the tracks on which the deaths occurred.

“This is a tragic accident and a sad reminder that no one should ever trespass on railway property,” Ms. Sénécal said.

According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, 52 people died and 15 were seriously injured on railway tracks in Canada while trespassing in 2009.

The two youths who survived the incident did not appear hurt; they were filmed by local television crews walking into an ambulance.

A spokeswoman for Via Rail could not say whether the train’s engineers had time to sound a horn when they spotted the youths. A police investigation is under way and the engineers were treated for shock

Edit: Another news feed indicated it was at an abandoned railyard, thus the subject.

And you know, like 5 years ago the same thing almost happened to me and a friend along those same tracks, this was on the west side of the tunnel... we were going to check out the container area back when they still kept containers there. If we didn't jump back when we did, a half a second or so we would have been smashed. Our problem was we crossed behind the end of a freight parked there on the tracks and didn't see down that last southern most line very far due to the curve the tracks make... and due to the parked line.

Those via trains are very silent, around there they go very fast... over 60km/h for sure my guess though is maybe over 80km/h if not more.... the sound also diffused in that area. Fucking tragic (excuse my french) not only RIP to the three young children, but those two who didn't get hit are going through something now. Also condolences to the families... including the family of one of my close friends, who just lost his little brother.
