Yesterday at the event as we were finishing up some people drove up and we started talking. Turns out that they lived there when the mine was still active. She told me that the way that they got supplies up there wes still by horse drawn carriages because the road was to hard to get big trucks up it.
Ok now if you have been up to New Idria and have seen the angry guy he's really not that angry. He lives in the old school house and his family was the school bus driver for the town. Its not that he doesnt want you there its just that he cares for your well being. Also on a side note he wasnt there yesterday. The lady that I talked to says he has a house in Modesto and that is where he lives.
A little history about after the mine closed.
After it closed a rehab company bought the school and used it for the criminally insane. It stayed a rehab for a little bit but then someone escaped and they never found him. The woman i talked to says she used to come up there to see her old town when the rehab was there and all you heard was screams coming from the house. Kinda weird. Anywise, after the rehab got shut down and oriental company bought the land and then never did anything with it. They stoped paying for the land and now THE COUNTY OWNES NEW IDRIA.
A little history about the surrounding area.
So the town of New Idria is just the place that they processed the quick silver and the mine there is not the only mine in the area. As she remembers there are about 4-7 mine in the hills there. She also said that because the water was so polluted the company built a dam in the hills to feed water to the tumblers and for all the houses. Also there should be another little village up by that dam. I also talked to a guy that was there earlier in the day about the dirt bike trails up above the town. It goes from the town all the way to Colinga. In those hills there are little houses and small ranches that haven't been lived in for around 50 years. No graffiti or vandalism.
Last she is a member of the Panchico historical society and I got her e-mail. If anyone has any questions for her let me know. Hope this helps in some way.

| | | | Ya we got up to the top part and could see the mine but it was a nasty toxic puddle for about a foot ball field long. Sadly enough the people that went consisted of 3 UER guys and 2 others. And it was all shot in film and i didn't take any pics.
