That's really strange. The pews weren't there in '09, and I wonder why they bothered to put more in...either it was a really fast opening and closing of the church again...i really don't know. that's strange. Really weird.

I dont think this is the church behind the pool area. They have at least two other identical churches on the base that I know of. One is restored and about 6 blocks south, the other...well lets just say it isn't near this part of the base.

Okay. It's weird because they look like the same exact church, same architecture, same light fixtures, etc. This place was just so massive I never knew exactly where I was or why there was development happening in the middle of it. It's insane to think they want to keep these places standing as rememberances of its past when taggers/scrappers have really just destroyed the place (see the bunkers, there are few that don't look completely structurally unsound...) I guess I barely saw half of what Fort Ord had to offer... and I could not for the life of me understand how anyone could get into the Impossible City, either. At least, in the daytime.

It sure seemed like any development on the sites (like the barnes and noble and walmart/target/kohl's/whatever it was) seemed more out-of-place than the abandonments themselves...

We're all just trapped between the stippled earth and the stubbled sky.

There was another church that was a lot darker and just as trashed. Maybe there's a third? Seems a bit superfluous to me to have two architecturally identical churches within walking distance of each other but whatevs.

I'll probably make another trek down there in a couple weeks now that I have a better idea of what's going on there.

There are definitely at least 2 chapels on the base. Could be more. The one that I went in was not the one near the pool--the one near the pool seemed more inaccessible when I was up there.

The armed services tend to pick a design and duplicate it, so the interiors of the churches could have actually been a perfect copy of one another. I'll be hitting up the the other church on the 16th and will let you know. There are untouched/unvandalized areas of this base as well, so not every structure is in the ruined condition you saw in the western portion. As far as how much you explored, from what I gathered in your Ord explore you actually only saw a small fraction of the base(maybe 10%). I've been there over a dozen times and have only hit about 60% or 70% of the base....yup its that big. Cheers!

I think I remember reading somewhere that at one time, the base encompassed an area roughly the size of the city of San Francisco.

Is there a bowling alley at Ord, or is it somewhere else I'm thinking of?

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

I think R&R Island is the one I was thinking of. I saw a picture of one of the pinsetters on Flickr, and somehow Fort Ord stuck in my head, but I guess that's where it is.

I'm new to the forum but I believe I can help with Fort Ord as it is a few minutes away from my house by car and I have spent many days exploring the area over the last year or so.

There are multiple churches, one in East Garrison, which is semi clean, at least it was last time I checked, one by the pool, which is a mess and full of graffiti, and one within CSUMB, with is still in use.

As for you guys talking about the Impossible City, that place is still active. Go at your own risk. It is a training center for various branches of the military and police forces, I can regularly hear automatic gun fire from that area. They will arrest you there if caught. I have never even tried to go in.

Otherwise if you guys have any questions or want to check out Fort Ord hit me up.

I'm debating whether or not I want to go into Imp City again. I pretty much walked around everything so I don't see a reason to go back.

There are a bunch of training areas that have been partitioned off. One of them was being used as a practice area by firemen last time I was there.

I may try to find the tank yard though... love tanks...

There is a tank yard? That sounds pretty cool, I haven't heard of that one.

I went down to Ord on Turkey day. Not much to report different than anyone else. We were poking around the warehouses when the State Park Police nailed us and ran wants and warrants. Told us to go away, but it wasn't even like a real reprimand.

Went to the jail, didnt try to go in. Never made it to impossible city, another day, another trip.....

Thx to everyone that day that sent me directions......
