October Mojave: Day 1 Calico, Bismark, Odessa and the "River of Souls"

This month is going to be very busy. In order to make the October Mojave event as good as possible I am visiting and revisiting all the planned sites. Here are the locations, I just came back from, for out first day thursday, October 21st.

1. We'll meet at 12PM in the town of Calico. specifically at the "Calico House restaurant" to have lunch.

2. We'll then take dirt roads to the mines. Carpooling will be necessary for many sections require high clearance.

3. At least it'll be during the day.

4. Our first stop will be Bismark mine. The underground paths from one in to the other are a thrill.

5.

6.

7. Our second stop will be the cavernous Odessa Mine. A vertical repel is available for those wanting to drop deep.

8.

9.

10.

11. From the Calico area we'll travel east on the 15, making a stop at the abandoned Rock-A-Hoola waterpark.

11.

12. "The River of Souls"

After visiting the water park we'll have diner in Baker. We'll travel north on the 127 and set up camp outside the back door to War Eagle Mine.

Edit: Event page updated. Be sure to sign up.

For the record Big Dave started these events. I give credit where credit is due. This will be #4 for me. Each time there has been a confusion on transportation. Car pooling saves on gas and we will be exerting several tanks of gas. But if a person can only come with a sedan we will adapt so no one is left. Usually a location is sedan suitable but for a few sites we'll just rearrange seating, ect.

Yeah the several tanks is what worries me, I drive a 74 Torino... lol

I'd be down to chip in a bunch for gas if I carpooled with someone, though.

is that water park the one that a janitor sued into the ground and they had to shut it down? or that's a different one? (the one i'm thinking of usually has a giant coca cola can you see from the highway)

wow makes our mines look like flooded underground mudpuddles

The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.

Go to IKEA, buy their package of like 1,000 tea lights for $5. Light like 100 of them (bring friends or a blowtorch) and photograph on various long exposure settings.

Anything to UE along there? Or is it a waste of time? (j/k)

Man, wish I could make it down for this. Sounds like it's gonna be an awesome event. Wife wants me to go on a vacation, but as she's not down for caving she wouldn't want to be part of it. One of these days hopefully I'll make it to one of the so cal events.
