Not that it is "abandoned" per se, but the empire mine in Nevada City/Grass Valley is really cool. I am sure there are lots of hard-rock mines around there as the underground complex was huge.

Up by Cherokee (Oroville/Chico area) you can see the effects of hydro mining... makes you wonder what the mountains used to look like.

There are also some old gold dreggers <sp?> and a ghost town up the Yuba River out of Yuba City/Marysville somewhere.

Sorry to be vague, but that could get your google maps search started.

There are quite a few out 49 in gold country... On my last trip I found a completely abandoned 20th century gold mine, with explosives left in the explosives locker, bitchin' mill and wide open adduct. Along with swimming in an old mill water wheel mill. Amazing history out there, but a 4x4 is a MUST!

Check out my photo blog!

All I can say is: Mt. Diablo

A lot of the entrances are grown over and eroded away, but there's definitely still mines to be explored (just inconvenient to find). Lemme know if you're interested, I spend many a weekend up there

Just saying "norcal" is quite a large area. You're talking about tens of thousands of mines. I can look up a specific area for you if you'd like, but I'm not inclined to look at all of norcal.

What specific area did you have in mind? You can PM me about it if you'd like.

Topo, topo, topo. A trip the the local library will also give you clues the Internet may not. People seem to have this idea that any available information has been digitized one way or another. Nothing is further from the truth. Also, join a NSS grotto if there is one nearby. Speak with park geologists but never rangers. Eyeballs on the ground are good too if you know what to look for. The fun thing about mining is all the detective work.

*Therrin goes walking through a National Park and sees something glinting through the bushes. As he walks closer he finds that they are eyeballs, he has found eyeballs on the ground! What a treasure!*

I noticed some mines up there on topo maps too. If you find anything at any of them, I'd like to hear about it.
