| | | Alright, pretty new myself to UE in general, have been researching UE in general, and have hit up my first spot, an abandon Farm House that was redone then remodeled then abandon, sorry no pics. That will change tho! Anyone else in San Diego, having the hardest time finding anything... well exciting to say the least. I've done a bit of research on Mines, but have found most to be just Vertical Mine Shafts (already read the threads on dangerous/skill involved with repelling) So where is the rest of the gang and the fav spots?

| | | San Diego is pretty slim pickins as far as good exploration spots. Everything that's abandoned pretty much gets torn down here to build million-dollar homes or shopping centers in its place. There is a fantastic abandoned air force base in the Laguna Mountains outside of Julian that I highly recommend visiting. If you PM me I can tell you how to get there.

At the air force base? There is zero security to speak of. I've been there at least 3 or 4 times and never seen another human being on the site. Just make sure you get a forest adventure pass for the windshield of your car ($5 for a day pass), and if a ranger stops and asks you what you're doing you tell them you're going hiking on the pacific crest trail. ;)

| | | The air force base is absolutely fantastic and I've visited it several times with friends. Every time I've gone, more and more people have been there wandering. First it was only us and a fire marshal who told us "you really shouldn't be in there" and then turned a blind eye. Next time we ran into some scalpers and another group. The third time there were multiple groups of teens farting around and rumors of them tearing it down. Not once have I been stopped, questioned, looked at funny, or even noticed by anybody from security. Pictures here~ As for other locations, I've done a cool storm drain that let out into the San Diego bay and poked around a few buildings in backwater areas. I've also seen and made a note of an abandoned set of industrial buildings down near the coast off the 5 that I've been meaning to scope out for months. Haven't done any mines or much else really.

The abandoned Air Force base atop Mount Laguna is now totally fenced off with 10-foot black, chain-link fencing crowned with razor wire. I was just up there a couple weeks ago. You cannot even drive up to the uppermost parking lot anymore which had the best view. You can only go as far as the lowest parking area. I never had any interest to check out the abandoned buildings on the lower side of the base (i.e. the mess hall, the officers' quarters, etc.), so I'm not sure if those are still standing or if they've been torn down. From what I've heard, those buildings have been torn down (or are in the process); the black fencing was put up around the remaining buildings on the higher side because they ran out of money to continue tearing everything down. The fencing-off of the remaining buildings was the best alternative, I guess, in their minds.

| | | I do post here. You were talking about the Pegleg Mine. I heard the Pegleg Mine is no longer in existence. I don't think you'll find any tunnels or shafts at its location. You should check out the area around Julian, CA. Lots of old abandoned gold mines there. The mines in San Diego County are small-scale compared to the big, extensive mines in Death Valley and the Mojave Preserve. But the mines here are fun to find and explore.

That is quite a shame. I'm glad that I explored my heart out there in the past few years so I don't feel any regret now that it can't be accessed.

Alright awesome! Yeah im trying to find the ones out in Jamul and the others along old Highway 80, but the Peg Leg Mine Looks to have something there, I think its a vertical mine shaft by the way the dirt looks on it from aerial photographs on Bing and Google, But definitely its there because you can see on Bing a little ! for dangerous on it. (check Bing for this its pretty crazy) though the only way to get there is along alto loma LN. and there is a old burned down houses around there too, so I am thinking that was a mine area.. might be some interesting things around there too! On Wednesday me and my friend are going to explore around those areas and the old highway 80 ones (maybe Julian its a bit of a drive) but I am almost positive there is some more to be found out here, I have a gut feeling! So wait then where/how did you find these mines? I have a couple links I guess I'll just post 'em here because if it took me FOREVER to find this website i'm sure no thugs or taggers are going to find it and hike out miles for 'em. Links: http://www.hellosa...om/Landmarks/Mine/ http://californiam...an+Diego&type=mine http://california....lpha=c&startrow=76
Though there is NOTHING i can find related to the history of places.... :/

| | | Yeah, it looks like there might be something there for the Pegleg Mine based on the satellite imagery. Let us know what you find! There is one old mine on Highway 80 that I know of. It is marked on topographic maps. It's past the Border Patrol checkpoint on Old Highway 80 and past the bridge that crosses Cottonwood Creek. On that straight stretch, pull over on the right shoulder. You will see the tailings pile up on the hill. It is basically at eye level, but to get to it, you have to go down a small ravine right next to the road, cross Cottonwood Creek, and climb up the other side. Shouldn't take you more than five minutes to do all of that. Another tunnel is indicated on topo maps back up the road right before the bridge. But that tunnel is no longer there. There is a vertical mineshaft a bit further down Old Highway 80 (indicated on topo maps), but there is nothing left. There was a lot of old, rusted debris on the ground though in the general area. That, too, was right next to the highway. I don't know of any other mines on Old Highway 80. The websites you listed are good sources to find mines. So are topographic maps. With those two things, you should be good to go. Good luck! Let us know what you discover! [last edit 9/5/2010 10:42 PM by hoodrat - edited 1 times]

Wow, that's crazy. I think the last time I was up there was around March/April, and it was business-as-usual up there. Walked right in and didn't see a soul the entire time. I even went up to the old radar towers and didn't see anyone. I never park in the lower or upper parking lots, I always park by the front gate that blocks the old access road and just hike up the access road to get there. I remember reading a news article a while back that said they were going to tear those buildings down at some point, but that point was in the unforeseeable future. That's a major bummer. I'm gonna have to go up there and check it out soon and see it for myself.
