| | | I haven't done the Red Rover, however Hugh Blanchard wrote on LAGoldmines:
The Red Rover (named by Governor Gage for his dog) goes down 600 feet and is also sealed although there are two contiguous horizontal passages totaling 166 feet at the top that can be safely walked through. Both mines have streets named after them, see Ritter Ridge topo. Drive north from the freeway on the Red Rover Road for a half mile and turn left at the first street with a white fence. Stop after a quarter mile when the dirt road gets bad and continue walking up the old road for about another quarter mile until you see the fenced in shafts. |
I could show you the Governor. Two friends and I spent a night digging it open again. (It's been a year and a half and I've been meaning to go back and check on it) It's pretty freeky though. There's another Adit a short walk from the Governor that we didn't fully explore either. We also scouted the "Hi-Grade" (I think) and found the shaft but didn't have any vertical gear to go further. | | | I've driven past both of them for years. Did some research on them a while back. The Red Rover mine, last time some people got in to climb it they fell to their sloppy deaths, and it was resealed. I was under the understanding that it was being "watched" for a while, or was on a camera system or something. I'll see if I can dig up my data on it. I've got loads of gear though, and it's very close to where I live. I'd be down to hit it up.

| | | Sounds good man. I'm in. **EDIT** I spoke with one of the Underground Explorer guys. We might be interested in putting together a trip to attempt a body recovery on the corpse that's down in the Governor Mine, there in Acton. Apparently the F.D. rescued one guy outta there and never recovered the other guy's body, said it "wasn't safe". I'd like to see if we can locate it. The main shaft is supposed to be somewhere between 650' to 1000' deep, with 4 main levels. I guess the bottom of the main shaft is flooded, but I've no idea how many levels are flooded as well. Depending on how things turn out and the depth of flooding, I'd be willing to bring in wreck diving gear and check the bottom of the main shaft. I've gone 242ft on normal air in the past when I was deep diving often. I won't go that far now but I'd be comfy doing a 180ft dive if the shaft is relatively clear of debris. We need to do a scouting run and an initial exploration first though. [last edit 8/13/2010 6:24 AM by Therrin - edited 1 times]

| | | New kids, I should note that it's not a good idea to enter the Governor. There's nothing to see and there's a high collapse danger.

I'm not sure this is feasible unless you can either: 1) Pull a pickup truck up out of a vertical shaft or dig around it safely. or 2) Feel like digging a passage through rockfall inside a VERY unstable mine. Unless you know of another entrance I don't. (I WAS looking at one a little further south that might be possible.
Entrance
Pickup truck + vertical shaft
Blowing collapsed shaft

| | | Wouldn't be the first time we've spent hours digging to access a mine system .... lol. There's gotta be access to the actual system. The stuff you've mentioned so far is all peripheral to the main shaft. But I'd be interested in going out to see what it looks like at this point and checking some of the other possible access points.

I'll link to it in a new thread tonight since I bet a lot of people don't know about it and it bares some chat about accuracy.

| | | Hey I just re-read this thread, what was that about having accessed a vertical shaft at the "High Grade" adit? Where's that? Btw, In mining, high grading refers to mining out the portions of the ore body that has the highest grade of material to be mined, however it may also refer to the concealment and theft of valuable gold or silver ore by miners for personal profit. You can find it in the Earth overlay. I didn't access it. We just scouted for viability. I know how to find it and that there's a secure looking head frame to rig to. From the small amount of tailings I don't suspect there's very much to the mine.

| | | As soon as I asked about it here I went and tracked it down on the overlay. Might be interesting to check out at least.
