Its just HDR. It was so dark we had to do it to bring out all the tones of the image

Agreed, tone down those sliders in Photomatix. If you want a good person to learn HDR from try Wolfheart, in fact he did a wonderful tutorial which I base my HDR settings on.
One a plus side, the middle two shots of these four, are really well done. The 3rd one being my favorite.
