Hiking in the San Gabriels

Since I've got an event lined up Sunday, I figured a thread about location finding and mine exploration in the San Gabriel's was in order.

So if you have no clue what to expect... here we go.

Key things:
•Parking in LA County forests generally requires an "Adventure Pass". Annual pass is ~$30 at Sport places. Go in with a friend to get two for $5 more. If you don't display apparently it's a $5 unenforceable ticket (but I haven't confirmed this).

•If you're going up the East Fork, plan on many river crossings. Especially if you don't know your way. Don't take your shoes off, just wear shoes you don't mind getting wet. Boots are bad, Tennis/Trailrunning shoes are good. Putting dry shoes onto wet feet for the 6th time gets highly time consuming.

•Quick drying hiking pants are good for water crossings and hiking. Jeans are better for mines, bush whacking, and yucca encounters. Excluding Big Horn, the mines are shorter than the hike so I suggest lighter materials.

•This isn't the desert, you don't roll up to a pile of tailings and walk in. Finding the mines in chaparral or woodland situations the is the hard part. Exploring them is much easier.

•Be aware of Poison Oak. It can be pervasive in many canyons - luckily the East Fork only has some smatterings of it. It's imperative notice and point it out to others - they could be sitting in your car on the way home.

•Research research research. You can generally see trails from the air in google earth but the second you hit the road things will look surprisingly different. I'll stare at G-Earth and topo maps for hours when I'm trying to find a new location.

Good info, thanks. The only mines I've been in were ones I've bumped into while out off roading. Mostly Big Bear, Gorman/Frazier, Barstow, Cal City, Kern River area. But never the ones close to home.

You can see a million miles tonite, but you can't get very far.

You people arent men. Men would be at the Grand Prix.
