| | | I arrived after nightfall and set up camp at Standard Mine #2, about a mile or two from Riley's. Since it was only 8 pm and the half moon was rising, I went out and took some night photography. 1.

8. Even though temperatures hovered around 50 I still froze my butt off once I stopped moving. Between that and just having seen the descent for the 100th time I couldn't sleep at all. Around 6:30 am I called it quits and headed out. I was on a mission to see some new sites. Iron Horse Mine had the remains of a hopper but extremely unstable shafts.

Blue Buzzard Mine was filled with Blue Jays. The climb to it was very difficult. It had a long shoot to an ore hopper and a collapsed head frame. This mine looked very inviting but I didn't have rope and was without a partner.

Between the two mines, someone had set up a little active camp. I bet it is used by an unhappily married, Kokoweef resident. It had fresh water, matches, latrine, grill, bedding, the works.

I was out of water so I head back to the 15. Picked some up at a gas station and then started my search for mohawk mine. Unfortunately, I took a wrong turn and drove 3 miles in the wrong direction over a tire grinder road. Then I hiked another 3 before giving up. I did find a secluded adit I can't find on any maps. It was about 200 feet deep into a copper rich deposit. Maybe I can name it

On the way back I realized my error. I had gone one mountain too far north. There, about a mile south, clear as day, was Mohawk Mine. Adit after shaft, after adit, after shaft. I tried to explore the whole thing from the outside but couldn't even manage that. They literally hollowed out the entire hill. Tunnels ran through, out the other side and popped out the top. I'm guessing there are at least 1-2 miles of workings inside.

It's within clear eyeshot of the 15 so I'm shocked I can't find more about it on the web. Maybe a good thing. Copper world is a mile north and a huge mining district is on the other side of Clark Mt. [last edit 3/26/2010 6:56 AM by robk700 - edited 1 times]
