It closed in Aprox. 1994. Small sections may have been used a bit longer. Very slowly being cleaned up. Probably gonna be a wildlife area & park.

| | | This would be in the Monterey Area? Ft. Ord MOUT City? Am I correct in assuming that? I know there is a MOUT City out in that area from my time at the DLI, and my own explorations out into the Ft. Ord wildlands.

| | | Hey, these pics are awesome, my gf and I just went to the Impossible City last week, figured I'd put up our pics. By the way, did you leave that target of the guy holding the wrench in the big building? The one with the tagging on the front that said ARE WE HUMAN? Or was that someone else? I think it's funny that that guy has been photographed by so many explorers but never taken from the site.
Let me know if anyone has any questions about this one! Have a good day all and stay safe. <3

Those look to be M103 heavy tanks; they had a hull similar to the M48, but it was longer and featured one extra road wheel group per side (7 per side vs. the 6 per side of the M48 & M60). If those are indeed former USMC M103 tanks, then that makes them M103A2s. The first M103s had gasoline engines, and were notoriously thirsty. So, the Continental AVDS-series diesel was fitted, requiring a complete reworking of the rear deck & hull (to make it look just like the M48 & M60 series with diesel engines). The USMC acquired them as the M103A2, with a few more upgrades including deep-water fording abilities. They served throughout the 1960s in Army & Marine front-line units, but did NOT see action in Vietnam. They left active service around 1972 or 1973-ish, and went into long-term storage until the 1980s (at least the USMC ones from the west coast did, and were stored at Yermo Supply Depot until the early 1980s, when they were officially decommissioned & sent off to be targets on various ranges). The M103 was developed in response to the Josef Stalin type of Soviet heavy tanks, and featured a tank built around a 120mm main gun. The British also responded with the Conqueror at around the same time, also sporting a 120mm main gun. Surviving M103s are quite rare; it would be a shame to see those scrapped or worse. Hmmm, I wonder how hard it would be to get a lowboy capable of carrying 70tons backed in there to retrieve one or two for my private collection... LOL!!

| | | Nice to see so many Devil Dogs on here! Tanks are one of my hobbies....plus I served in the USMC tank battalions in the mid-1980s through Desert Storm. I spent 3 years at Camp Pendleton and had fun exploring that base with my 4x4. At the time, as long as we stayed off the active ranges and could stay "out of sight, out of mind," so to speak, we could four-wheel all over the base. My buddies & I would spend many weekends exploring the remote corners of Camp Pendleton, but sadly, I can't seem to find my photos from that time period...we did find old buildings and ranches that pre-dated the founding of the base. I also found an old stretch of concrete highway that was just to the east of I-5, near San Onofre nuclear power plant, that we would use with our tanks when traveling to one of our firing ranges...it had date stamps of 1929 and a few repaired sections from the 1930s, making it one of the oldest sections of hard road surface in the state. DANG if I can't find the photo I took with my old disc camera, showing that 1929 date stamp in the concrete roadway!!! Grrrr!!

| | | I can confirm that the MOUT site is still being used, me and some buddies spent the night there a while back, and after a half day of exploring the second day we had to leg it because a couple platoons showed up for an exercise. Had to duck from some trucks and when we got back to the town there was a big 'ol formation in front of the building we were set up in, had to sneak in the back to grab our shit and make a drop off the fire escape to get by without being noticed.
