Learning rope work (non photo essay)

Hey guys. So I bought all the gear I need to rappel including additional gear for a safety break. I'm looking for anyone to train and work with. My goal is to be able to access areas otherwise inaccessible. Chiefly, certain downtown building and mines, mines, mines. I still need to buy the gear to ascend but one thing at a time. Give a shout even if you want to train with my gear. For the company I don't mind swapping turns with the equipment. I'm gonna start with simple 15 ft. 45 degree slops and work my way to places like the bridge to nowhere and 800 ft. mine shafts. But in baby steps.

Oh man, that sounds like so much fun. I have a harness and shoes, but that's it. And I'm in NorCal too. Damn.

I'm more than happy to go over things with you...so long as you're willing to share the downtown venues. PM me if you're interested.

Haha. You bet. They only have a general meeting once a month, though, where the months activities are discussed. And it's always when I get a job offer after being unemployed for a week or two. I've been trying for a year and only made one. Crossing fingers for the next one. Great group here in LA. Can't say enough good things.

...including additional gear for a safety break...

Don't use it. They add unnecessary complication and they don't work. They have killed more people than they have saved.

Anyway, I'm looking for the same thing in my area on the east coast. It's not easy to find. But read the book On Rope! Twice. Or three times.

I was in LA this xmas break. If I'm ever back in your area (I will be one day) I'll get in touch with you and we can do rope stuff. It's been an obsession of mine lately.

Interesting. I was planning on using a Bachmann knot to stop myself but same concept. I think I'll still use it in my first few practices just as a secondary safety. But I will not rely on it. I currently have a figure 8 with wings but will up grade to something more advanced soon.

I currently have "The Climber's Handbook" and "How to Rock Climb". I'll add "The Book on Rope".

I'm sure I run into you someday. I'm on the east coast often. Cheers. And thanks for the great advice!

Check out the ATC's for rapelling and belaying. They're freakin awesome. You might try checking with edsel for some additional info as I believe he used to deal with this kind of stuff in the military.

Oh, it's just called "On Rope". Guess my phrasing was confusing.

Cool! I live on the border of Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina. Let me know if you're ever in the area.

That's funny you say that. Cause that's exactly were I want to start testing out the gear. I drove up to Griffith Park yesterday between some classes I'm taking. Too many people around to point and laugh. I'll be free for a few hours sunday. Be in DC m-w. Nothing planned after that. I'd sure like someone else to learn with. Cheers.
