| | | Rispin Mansion has been abandoned for over 25 years. It was built around the turn of the century by Fredrick Hihn. When Capitola's owner F.A.Hihn died in 1913, his daughter, Katherine Cope Henderson, put the resort up for sale. H. Allen Rispin, a wealthy San Franciscan, bought it at the end of World War I. Although he had grand plans to develop "Capitola by-the-Sea," Rispin overextended himself and was broke by 1928. He lost his elaborate 22-room mansion and most of his holdings in 1930-31. This picture (below) was taken after the Rispin home had been sold to Burlingame millionaire Robert Hays Smith. The Smith family ran into financial problems during The Great Depression and surrendered the mansion in 1939. It was then sold to the Catholic Church for use as a convent by the Order of Poor Clares. The nuns resided at the complex until 1957. The mansion has since been vacant of permanent residents, and is now owned by the City of Capitola. The mansion and the history is widely written up. Enjoy

Says the man who has gone from the Unabomber to my favorite Martian. It's an incredible place, but it also paints - pun intended - this vivid portrait for just how stupid tagging is. I can appreciate good graffiti, but to just scribble your tag stupidly all over what amounts to a monument is so stupid. Yeah you were there, so what, take some incredible pictures like Bonnie & Clyde did.

So you can see just how creepy it really is. The pic is by Joshua Hoffine, he has a creepy ass portfolio. This place was intact till march 09 when an arson fire destroyed 75% of the place. Unfortunately I knew of this place long before & my lazy ass didn't get out to it. Lesson learned, see em while ya can.

| | | well ok feel dumb for not seeing the link but just like those posted here wonderful...fun to imagine what a place it was when it was new....as for the tagging...yeah those people suck...but its kind of fitting...at least for me seeing that i am a photographer who does so much work with urban decay....its adds the subtext that its not just time and nature that tears and ruins its man and his need to create and destroy. Those stupid kids have seen something that was beauty and creation and felt the only way to show that they to existed is to defile it in some way...they know that I can never create like this because of social position or lack of skill or just plain stupidity but anyone can destroy and while it is less then the creation it gives them a sense of being superior because they were able to break that which is built....scar that which is beautiful....its sad and its pathetic but it is an important part of urban decay. Nature takes apart to rebuild only man can destroy for pleasure.

| | | Neat you came out and explored Rispin & that someone finally added a DB entry. I was there maybe a year ago but I didn't take any pictures. There were a surprising amount of locals just passing through when I visited, I guess out hiking and enjoying a nice day. I live 10 minutes away from there now, but haven't been back. My favorite part was the floors with all the furniture place markings.
