Kokoweef and the "River of Gold"

While searching the Ivanpah mountains, via map and satellite, preparing for the last mojave event, I came across this site. At the time I figured it long past abandoned but when the 76Grinch and I rolled into town it became apparent that it was not. Though most of the structures and machinery had been discarded through 80 years of near continuous mining, the town indeed still have some life to it. The first clues were the domesticated queal scampering across the dirt roads and the live stock, standing behind caged, fences, curiously watching our every move. Then, down the mountain, on a weathered ATV came Pat. Once at base camp he brushed off layers of sand stone, cursing under his breath. We began asking him questions about the town and the obvious mines shafts I has seen via satellite. Once he realized we were only curious adventurers he seemed to warm a bit. We sat down at his porch and began going through the hundreds of pictures he had taken of his recent discoveries. Statues and codes carved by the Spaniards 500 years ago. All markers would lead to a possible treasure of staggering wealth. See pat had come out to this brutal part of the desert some 20 years ago after hearing rumors of a giant underground river of gold beneath the peaks of Kokoweef. The story goes:

As night was soon approaching we thanked pat for all he had told us. I promised I'd be back. Ever since that day I've become more and more fascinated with the possibilities. Maybe I'm getting a little bit of the gold fever. There's much more to this story so if interested in learning more do a Kokoweef search. You'll find much information. The best can be found here:

Good hunting,
Rob

P.S. Please RSVP if you can make the next Mojave event. Cheers.

quite a fascinating tale, sounds like a really fun trip out there and quite a character you met up with! i love meeting folks like that, and reading the story gave me a touch of gold fever too

a comment -- if i recall correctly, the largest cave in the world has a floor-to-ceiling height of 650 feet or so. a 3,000 foot floor-to-ceiling cave in the mojave would be really remarkable from a geological standpoint too, the idea that tidal action from the pacific reaches that far is quite colorful.

despite the questionable account, who's to say? stranger things have happened -- and even with a fanciful account, there could be quite a bit of gold down there all the same?

Geologically, it is known that there are indeed many rivers flowing under the mojave and out to the seas and oceans. Specific dye has been put into water sources and found hundreds of miles away. A fun little legend was that a japanese sub followed one and ended up near Las Vegas before turning back. This of course is mere fiction. And I'm willing to bet Kokoweef could be part too. At least the size and scope. I do believe there is something down there, though. The mining company sure has for almost a century. And there are three known caves already in the mountain but dynamited hundreds of feet in by the old man. Ground penetrating radar can't go far down enough to prove or disprove. If everything is true about the old man's story there would be enough gold to cover the national debt.

A few people already have Come out to the camping trip and we'll visit it.

I love a good desert mystery.

And so does adventure author Clive Cussler. I hear he based "Inca Gold" on this and similar stories.

22ed. Check out the events page. Should be a great but cold time. Our camp will be in the Riley camp area but at a less windy spot. Not marked on maps so we meet noon, saturday, at the Kelso Depot parking lot. Cheers.
