| | What is this structure? Old bridge or elevated canal? < on 7/28/2009 9:17 PM >
| | | I discovered this years ago when I lived in Chico and would drive back and forth to my family in the Bay Area. I got out and managed to climb on it, but could not tell if it was once a roadbed. I'm thinking an old canal. I an having trouble linking the location, but on Google Maps, the address is: 7212 Grimes Arbuckle Rd., East Colusa, CA, USA; then street view it to the north.

| | | Looks like it was a raised canal. Most likely used by the farm.

| | | there's another one of these things out there too, i remember driving by it to get out to one the butte silos. the difference though is that the one i saw was much larger than that, and more than 15ft above the current road way that was next to it. Kind of makes me wonder if the old road network out there was partially elevated as some kind of flood avoidance thing.

| | | Perhaps it was for conveying municipal utilities across the river? (i.e. sewage pipes, electrical, storm drains, etc)?

thanks tb, i looked around for it a bit, but couldn't find it for some reason. here's a street view link on google, it's 180 off though, so you have to spin it around for some reason. http://maps.google...=0,359.992683&z=17

| | | I never knew that other structure existed, but I've never been down Pass Rd. What's odd about both of these is where they start and end, and where parts were removed. The one on Grimes Rd. is cut by a lower canal and dirt road. I still won't rule out an elevated roadway because the area does flood and is swampy, but it doesn't look typical of a roadway viaduct design.

| | | at the eastern end of the pass rd one you can see where the piles change styles, and the "road bed" is gone, as if there used to be a ramp or something at that spot. I doesn't seem like it would be too hard to tell if you could get on top of it...
