| | A real Noob wants advice... < on 7/21/2009 7:17 PM >
| | | Ok, so I have developed a keen interest in UE, but i live in a relatively rural area and the city i live near has precious little that is left vacant or decaying (Huntsville Alabama)so I generally will have to travel to Nashville or Birmingham to see much worthwhile. I have explored a coupla abandoned farmhouses (and by abandoned I mean truly abandoned and NOT POSTED...around here trespassing on POSTED property is taking your life in your own hands) and taken a few pics, also an abandoned grain silo/distribution house, and an abandoned school. But these are all in the boondocks and aren't really the more interesting infrastructure/industrial sites. I truly would like to be more active, but I haven't found any meetups in my area. COuld someone steer me in the direction of a group in my area or someone willing to let me tag along on a trip or two. I am responsible, never destructive, take only pictures, leave only footprints. My wife wants to go along as well...we both are interested in UE and already do some geocaching. The good pics I post are hers, the bad ones are mine

| | | My experience is that in-city factories look like this...
w3strbo's mill, night run. Large empty space and a hobo hoodie. The whole mill isn't like this, but the only 'machinery' left is the elevators and roof ventilation.
While rural ones have this:
Shuttle loom with warp beam mostly strung
Cotton carding line. Mascarah's mill, first visit Trying to name the person who found it because I've been a tagalong too much lately... Try to plan an afternoon trip with the wifey to a decaying industrial/mill town somewhere nearby. If you scout a few vacant places on a map you'll usually find one worth doing. And maybe even bring a GPS unit and some geocache destinations as a credibility prop and backup entertainment. Welcome to the forums and good luck. Wear bright colors so you can't possibly be a robber, right?

| | | Welcome to UER! Others have already given a lot of good advice. I can never, ever underscore the usefulness of Google, it's simply great for finding abandonments. Some other run of the mill things to look around at include county records or atlases, wikimapia, and as always, local news sources which often cover stories on blight or abandoned "eye sores." Also, take a look at bridgehunter.com, http://www.kirkbridebuildings.com/, as well as this site I found: http://freepages.h.../~gtusa/usa/al.htm Hope it helps, and good luck!

| | | Your best bet is to follow major highways and roads and look around as you drive. i've found some of the most promising places simply by doing this. Particularly roads that lead directly from or to an interstate. Along these roads is where your going to find the more interesting industrial and residential locations. Bigger business needs a good road and you can rest assured they needed that road just as bad as the new active ones there now do. good luck in your travels!
