Verdi, NV. Abandoned cat house? If you know, do share.

Anyone know anything about that old place up in Verdi, NV? Just about 10 miles west on 80 from The Biggest Little City In The World. Lots of great old wood old west lookin' architecture, a cement pool. Didn't make it inside the thing; boarded up pretty good and lots of locals around giving me the eye. But one of these nights perhaps.

Also, I just moved up here. Any Reno-Tahoe area based UEers know some good old haunts to check out? I own a vehicle.

I spent some time in Minden, NV and it goes without saying to check out Virginia City and the surrounding towns. VC is touristy, but the cemetery is awesome. There's also a dirt road out of VC to the north that will dump you back near Reno and it has a stage stop, Indian petrographs, and stone walls built by the Chinese.

Just break out the topographical maps and Google Earth. There's some neat stuff east of Carson City off HWY 50.

Too bad you didn't post a little sooner, I was up there about 10 days ago. If you go driving around the Carson River, there's at least the remains of a silver smelter, a couple old ruined bridges, an old silver mine that's usually blocked up but frequently broken into by the locals, and a concrete plant that's not abandoned but easy and fun to wander around. Feel free to message me if any of that stuff interests you. Also, seconded on Virginia City.

Thanks both of you. VC is a great jumping off point. Really, Nevada is one big ghost town. No matter where you go you will find something old and rotten and rusting into the earth.

Pirate, are you talking about up on over the CA border, off of 89 and 4? If so, I drove by there last month and wondered what that rickety metallic riverside structure was. Thanks for the info! Carson River back there has some great spots for a brisk roadside dip, too.

Let me know if you folks are ever in town and want to do some 'splorin. I'm looking to get up north, both west and east of the Black Rock. The nothingness between Winnemucca and Mountain "City" has some great spots, too.

I was actually talking about the area east of Carson, a bit off the 50. I've never gone poking around that region down over the border, but there was so much mining all through that whole area that I wouldn't be surprised if any old rickety riverside structures were mining related.

Edit:
If you get to Virginia City by going up 342, there used to be a couple old mining structures on the way. Nothing you can really wander through, but you might find some stuff for climbing on or getting good photos. I haven't been up that way in at least two years though, so I can't completely vouch for it anymore.

Nice, will check it out. On the way to VC is Gold Hill and Silver City. Silver City's goods are mostly on private, occupied lands, but Gold Hill has an old train tunnel and a pretty deep, dark open shaft complete with a decrepit lowering tower and adjacent winch house with an enormous Westinghouse winch. You can play with the controls, but there's no electricity. If there was, I bet the thing would work.

The first four are Gold Hill. That last pic is Silver City. Pretty inviting, but we heard gruff-sounding people working machines, so perhaps a night visit is in order.

Northeastern Nevada, especially Elko and White Pine counties are thick with ghost towns. My favorites are Metropolis and Midas (inhabited). Lots of small settlements and isolated ranches that aren't even on the maps.

If you head south through Mineral county on 95 neat Tonopah, Candelaria is worth a stop. Columbus is a little more to the south on a salt flat. Watch for open shafts if you visit Columbus. They aren't fenced and one almost ate my Jeep =).

I lived in Tahoe for 13 years. I remember a bunch of shitty motels near stateline (some abandoned, some not). But by the time I left ( Just after that huge fire a few years back), The big time hotels bought up the properties and began plans to get rid of them. Don't know if they're still there. if not, it's too bad. Never explored them.

Not just NV. Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas counties are the same way. There are old mining towns and logging towns abandoned all over the place up here, as well as old abandoned fire watches and radar installations.
