| | | Gatic style manhole keys < on 7/3/2009 6:53 AM >
| | | Hi, I work as a fitter and turner at an engineering factory and want to have a bash at making a "Gatic" type manhole lifter. I can't be stuffed paying the $80-120 AUD that plumbing suppliers sell them for, so I thought I may as well make my own ones. The trouble is I don't have any measurements / dimensions for the 2 bolts. I know one bolt has a forged flat section to go into a groove on the manhole cover. And there is another bolt that is wound up to "pop" the manhole. Making the bolts is no hassle as my work has all the necessary threading / forging equipment. So if anyone here has a Gatic manhole lifter can they please post the bolt diameters, bolt lengths, dimensions of forged square end on bolt. This would be greatly appreciated and If I can make them easy enough I may be able to sell some very cheap. thanks

| | | Option 1: Find gatic manhole, measure hole. Option 2: Goto supplies store, measure key.
Mine's just a I shaped piece of metal with an elongated top piece. Works just fine for me. also lol, dwayne dibbly.

| | | do they manufacture engineers in your "engineering factory"?? and yea, I think the best advice has already been given....try google patents or go to the store with a vernier and just measure the bolts yourself, or just buy one and return it once you've got the required data hope this helps

| | | really? its not that hard to replicate!
They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn! |

| | | Thanks guys, I actually went and measured the slot in one of those square Durham type lids that are commonly used on storm drains over here. It seems the round ones are mostly used on sanitary sewers in Australia. Correct me if I am wrong, Thanks for advice about Google patents found a few interesting ideas there.

| | | You're lucky, being in Melbourne, that lids arent too heavy. Most ppl there use a small easily concealable t-piece lifter. In Sydney you have to cart a fucking monster of a lifter around in order to get those bloody Durham pizzas outta the ground. Ive made a variety of manhole keys (usually to replace ones ive lost) over the years, you just get it to the average correct size, then go outside n find the nearest cover, try it out and if its too big, file/grind it down some more... do so until it fits good. If your lifting anything over 50kgs, id suggest making the lifter bigger as a small t-bar hurts your hands if you use it to lift anything heavier. Thing is, being in Melbs, most drains have easy outfall/infalls, so you prolly wont need to pop that manhole covers anyway, unless your doing 69er a lot lol. Edit: Theres no set rule for what covers you'll find over what systems... Melbourne has a wider variety of covers than any other city. [last edit 7/28/2009 2:43 PM by siologen - edited 1 times]

| | | Thanks Siologen, the ones my work make are perfect. Just have to ask to "borrow one" and then be clumsy and forget to return it...oh no! I was going to stuff around and make a Gatic type one but what's the point.
