What do you recommend for a new explorer?

I am not asking anyone to give me their secret locations or places that are not currently accessible to me via the database here. I am asking for a few locations that are low key in the Monterey Coast area that a person new to this can get their feet wet (metaphorically speaking).

I am new to urban exploration and am looking to hit a few places where I can practice with my camera and really not have to worry about getting into trouble.

The more urban decay involved, the better, but I am willing to try just about anything to start. And as for the obviousness of Fort Ord, I really don't feel comfortable in some the more remote locations.

So, with all that being said, any suggestions from people in this forum for me would be greatly appreciated.

I waited every night for a week at the Beet Scales, no one showed? Curious...

May I recommend instead of asking for locations, to ask for people to explore with. We generally don't give handouts for sites or locations to newbs, but we do give you an equal opportunity and chance to explore with us and show you around.

May I also suggest to read up on the forum rules & other posts within this forum as that may help you become more familiar with how we do things around here.

Welcome to the Pacific Southwest Forum. Hope to explore with you soon!

@musket boy - Yes, the aquarium is still there. As long as the city will allow it to be there, it will be there. If it were to close, Monterey would lose a much needed source of income (like when Fort Ord closed).

@RailGuy88 - Thank you for the advice. I am still reading and familiarizing myself to this site and admit that, frankly, I have a lot to learn in the way of etiquette and the rules here in general. I would like to get the chance to meet and go out with others.

Sign up for the upcoming events... Or just make some time during the summer and come up this way to explore.

I think we're due for another local meet 'n greet, so keep an eye out for that as well.

In all seriousness, though, I hear there is a prison on Ord that is worth exploring. Monterey doesn't have much, but you could look into the recently (consumed partly by fire) Rispin Mansion in Santa Cruz. These are places that are well known, and well trashed, so explore at your leisure. The good stuff is always the stuff you find on your own though!

Google Earth was helpful to me. It took a while to figure out what I was looking at in the aerial views so I checked known areas to become familiar with aerial photos. Then I started exploring until I see something interesting. Look for cars and people. If none then it might be abandoned and worth exploring. The best find is your own and one that isn't known by everyone including taggers.

@everyone - Thank you for all the advice. I looked up the prison at Fort Ord and was suprised at the amount of information available. I think I am going to make that my first 'official' exploration.

I know there are other spots out there, it will just take time for me to find them.

Again, thank you for the advice.

Also overlaying the road map shows "roads" that don't want to be counted as roads anymore. Some are public streets, public property, and can be walked upon without trespassing!

Railroad beds with or without rails are good too; sometimes privately owned by real peckerheads, other times "rails to trails" walkways for mountain biking or x country skiing. Some go on for miles, beyond the limits of human endurance, but don't allow motorized vehicles so you get the route to yourself.
