|  | | | In a park in CC County I have found 3 mines with the biggest around 300' deep and around 15 prospects that go from 10' - 30'. (When does a prospect become a mine?) The deepest I have found yet is in the pictures posted it’s the San Pedro dug in 1862-66, looking for copper and gold. The entrance goes back 30'-40' (Nice camping spot) then it drops down a 50-60 degree slope for as much as 100 yards. Halfway down theres 2 side tunnels that go 20' or so and when it gets to the bottom there's 3 tunnels with the longest going around 75' +. There's wooden rails with steel strapping on it in most of the lower sections, structurally most of it is solid rock with little shoring. I read a report from April of 1865 and it was only 25' deep at the time, its cousin down the hill the La Feliz was already 140' deep. I found the La Feliz but its on a steep cliff and erosion has filled it with rock, it may be diggable but it would be hard.The filled in La Feliz has potential to be the bigger mine as it was already 140' back when the San Pedro was only 25'. Down at the La Feliz there's also a large stone "Blacksmiths" pad that’s starting to disappear in the trees and according to the report another tunnel which I havent found. I know of one other mine with a large tailings pile that’s filled with erosion, we spent a day once trying to dig it out but ran out of time and never got back. Maybe its because of the case of Turbo Poison Oak we both got.

|  | | | Damn... be careful in those things. I never really thought of Contra Costa having many mine shafts. Now I am curious as to whether or not they produced.
Contra Costa County is a big place. Are these mines in the Pleasanton hills or Danville? Martinez? I am just curious geographically.

Ooh, they were being very careful & responsible! Didn't you notice in the one photo that the alcohol they're drinking inside the mine was contained in cans, instead of glass bottles which could break into sharp pieces & cut someone?!
