The collapse of the Leer Tower project has thrust the 19-story structure at Second Avenue North and 17th Street deeper into disrepair. Vagrants again sleep in the building, leaving behind water damage from the windows they open. Thieves have stolen the copper tubing from the plumbing system.
Principal Erik Hendon led a group of 15 Auburn University Architectural Studio students on a tour of the building last week and was saddened to see its current state.
''It had been at least six months since I'd been in that building, and it has definitely deteriorated even more,'' he said. ''There certainly is a lot more repair work to be done now than needed to be done a year ago.''
Now that would be a cool field trip!
