How cool! That there is one hell of an adventure. A big one too. Nothing I hate more than coming across a mine, getting all excited, and then finding out it's 50ft. long. Bravo.

Dude that's crazy. I'm always super nervous when checking out old mines. You'd have loved this one I found last week in Nevada. One of the biggest mines i've ever found. Some of the shafts were so deep you coulnd't hear a rock hitting the bottom. We weren't brave enough to venture very far into it though...

Interestingly enough, the wooden braces are in place to keep the loose rocks stationary, not to prevent any sort of a catastrophic collapse. I do suppose we're taking our lives into our own hands, but isn't everything in life just a calculated risk? You might not agree with our calculations, but I'm sure happy with the results.

We'll be headed back early June (9th - 11th) for another visit. If anyone is interested in joining us, drop me a line, everyone is welcome.

Oh! I didn't say I wouldn't go in those mines, I've been in tons of 'em over the years, I think I might remember that last one there, if it is out near Barstow/Calico area? They all can look alike from the inside however.

I've had my share of stupid scary mine explorations!!

There has been a lot of mine exploration here lately. I predict someone is going to either be severely injured or killed before the end of the summer.

Here is a website with some mine safety tips, remember to be safe in these things. They can be deadly.

We haven't yet, probably on account of the booze and ropes.

I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner!
Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite.

Please don't tell me that board he is walking on is over a vertical shaft. I'm getting the shivers just thinking about it.

dang dude, you win an honorable mention in the sketchy entrance award. I've seen worse, but left before dying/taking out a camera/getting hit in the head by a 500 lb rock.

I know which mine you're talking about! it does look kinda similar, but not quite the same. that one near calico is pretty cool though if you're a fan of tunnels/caverns. need to get out there with some repelling gear to check out the lower levels though.

Now that I think back all those many years ago, it seemed the calico area mine was much bigger once you got into the main room, with lots of shafts leading out at a few levels. I think it had tracks running on the floor, and a few vertical shafts that you had to be aware of. But what I remember most was looking up and seeing 25 or so beams keeping the top from becoming the floor.
I think I remember seeing sky, as I looked past the beams?

I'm pretty sure the beams were just holding up along a vein that got removed. there was a random tunnel at the top of the slot that I never got around to looking at though. neat mine though. need to go back when I still have camera battery...

Very cool shots man, You've got balls to go into those abandoned mines without any equipment. I'd love to do one of those someday but the whole toxic gas thing scares me.

you just need to be aware of things, and know when to walk away.

everytime I go into a mine, I always check a base pulse for walking around, and recheck my pulse periodically (every minute or so) to check for quickening pulse (usually a sign of lower oxygen). also good to pick mines that are well ventilated. that one I've got a picture of there has holes everywhere and lots of cross-ventilation.

that mine is more impressive with a size comparison:
