I was here last weekend and was approached by someone that claims to be beginning a rental agreement with the owner of this glass factory. He said they'll be using the space for a recycling business in a month or two. He didn't make a big fuss out of us shooting there but said for future visits we'd need to "coordinate" something so we don't "get in each other's way."

He was vague on details and his story didn't quite add up, but he did seem to have legitimate access to the site, so I'm really not sure what to make of the whole affair. My gut feel is that he wants to get a little rent subsidy from anyone wanting to come in and shoot there once his operation is in full swing. I asked him some questions about who owns it, how he was planning to use any space there to run a recycling business, how much he was planning to clean up the site, etc...all vague, noncommittal answers in reply.

I just couldn't make out if he was some random weirdo or if he was being cagey about giving me info for other reasons (maybe he does plan to run something out of there but as a squatter?). In any case, I thought it worth reporting here that if you visit this site in the future you should be aware that it may or may not be occupied by someone that does or does not have permission to be there and that may or may not try to shake you down for a contribution...or something. (The whole encounter was other worldly.)

svr: strange. very strange. Sounds like he might be actually telling the truth though. my experience with people who take over abandoned places like this, is that they are very shady and vague, just like you described.

I was there a week ago and I was stopped by a security guard who drove around the corner before I was able to enter, so I didn't make it inside. He let me take pics of exteriors but sat in his car and watched to make sure I didn't enter the building, he told me it was "too dangerous". Just a heads up.

I have been there twice within the last 3 weeks. The first time went fine, we found an entrance and were inside the building for quite a few hours. No problems with security, but there was a portable with a car parked next to it (the car had current license plate tags) that kind of sketched us out. Last Sunday I made another trip out there and the entrance we used last time was locked up. It was chained shut and there was debris moved to block it. We found another way in and had a good time. Same car was outside though.

Same here, in the sense that I was there recently and if we went in the same way you did, then it's a shame it's sealed now.

Ah, the great hydra of exploring. Keeps ya on yer toes.
