| | | Did anyone else catch the Spark! program about photographing Oakland's 16th Street Train Station? Has anyone here gotten official access? http://www.kqed.or...le.jsp?essid=24336 Katherine Westerhout's work looks really good.

I missed that! There's a model photographer on flickr who got legit access, but only after jumping through some hoops I heard. It's my understanding they have security cameras now...

| | | I've been there 3 times. The first 2 were renegade, the last was with permission (through a friend of a friend). The first 2 visits were easily the best because the place was clean and less vandalized. On the last visit, there was junk being stored in the space (you can actually see some of it in the first photo in that linked article...those are the railings from outside). The clutter frankly spoiled the place for photos. Also, a fire in the back area has left some smoke damage around it. But even worse than that (photographically), were the big cables draped on the walls for the motion detection system. There are two motion detectors installed in opposite corners, with a camera that (I believe) turns on if the detectors 'see' something.
I haven't looked at the article in detail yet, but I will be very curious to see if those cables are in her shots. [last edit 4/16/2009 5:49 PM by rustyjaw - edited 1 times]

| | | She doesn't have any photos of the station up on her site, but in the KQED piece you can see the cables on at least 2 of the interior walls. Too bad.

I'd be curious to see if she got in by bribing the half-homeless caretakers with illicit substances, which as far as I can remember used to be the best way to get in there.

I heard the guy you have to go through is kind of a jerk and made it difficult to get legitimate access for a photographer. Eventually he got access, but I guess it took him about 4 months and in the end he had to pay a bribe as well. Doesn't seem worth it...
