Obsolete Electrical Building - Ortega Highway. San Juan Capistrano.

This structure is a bit of a puzzler.

It's loaded with obsolete electrical gear. If I had to venture a guess as to the era, I'd say late 70s's. It's located in easy reach of transmission wires, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was some sort of substation in a previous life.

Some of the logs I found made mention of "Hours of service" of diesel engines, which could have been generating for the local farm community before San Juan Capistrano started to expand. There is a Pacific Bell logo on the sign out front, telling of phone wires underground.

There is an outhouse out back, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone spent shifts here, keeping all the circuit breakers intact (Ralphies dad from A Christmas Story).

I forgot my respirator, and the smell of rot/mold made it a brief stop. I'll have to return and see what all the paperwork was about.

Cal-Trans is widening the Ortega Highway, and have been grading the area just West of the structure. Will they demo it? Who knows. See her before she's gone! Ortega Highway, less than 1 mile East of Antonio Parkway. On the left.

good stuff, I live reasonably close. Let me know if you plan on a second trip.

By the way... how ever did you defeat the alarm?

Sick site Mike! I doubt it's a substation though, probably some old school 70's phone switch. The generator log was likely their back up generators for the switch.... That's just a guess though...

Check out my photo blog!
