| | | Wow it was the coolest thing ive ever seen...the pinnacle of aerial photography and hobby. I arrived with family and friends about 10 minutes before we heard the first helicopters. You could hear the Sikorsky helicopters from 15-20 miles away flying over metro LA and coming toward Long Beach Airport. There 3 Sikorsky and 2 Blackhawk helicopters, flying in groups of 2 and 1 single. They approached the airport from all directions and landed at different places around the runway. Once they all landed, they taxied toward Air Force One. The Sikorsky helis opened up and a swarm of service members, media, and other officials walked briskly to AF1 and boarded. A single Blackhawk stopped in front AF1 and Obama got out with some cabinet members, and walked casually toward the stairs of the jet while waving to media on that side of the airport. He boarded and AF1 started taxing to the runway within 1-2 minutes. Once they hit the runway, they were gone. It all happened in minutes...they dont fuck around. There were snipers on every rooftop, sniffing dogs walking through the crowd...never seen anything like it. Very awesome experience, and i dont think ill ever seen anything more impressive than what i saw today.

| | | Hey dave!!!! it looks like the men in black suits are gonna pay you a visit. I was there at 4:30 pm yesterday, saw a guy and his dog getting arrested. I forgot to take pictures of it cause I was focused on making sure they didn't shoot the dog. You know Long beach P.D. They beat up other police that come into their city. I'm probably lucky I forgot to photo it! Anyway good luck with the dark suits. These are the best shots I was able to get.

Those were great shows! I really liked the one on Marine One. Funny how the main pilot's name is "Frenchie" and that they let the new guys practice live landings on the White House lawn. [last edit 3/21/2009 3:41 AM by cambrianguy - edited 1 times]

| | | Along with AirForce One, besides all the Helo's, there is always a group of F-16's. Usually these planes are never seen, but always heard. They flank AF 1 then break off out of camera range when landing.

Combat Air Patrols over areas the POTUS is visiting aren't always done, it just depends on a bunch of factors, and the fighters do loose orbits around a designated 'bullseye,' often 10 or 30 miles away from where the POTUS actually is.. But when there are F-16s or F-15s doing the POTUS CAP mission, there's usually also an USAF E-3 AWACS or CBP P-3 AEW&C plane up, plus tankers. AF1 usually doe not have any sort of fighter escort. The MH-53(s) in the photos are USMC HMX-1 'greenies,' so they'd be used to transport support personnel, leap-frogging between multiple sites, etc. but they're very basic inside -- a big, bad-ass flying version of a cargo van. The VH-60(s) shown are white-tops, which mean they're equipped for Marine One missions. Not photographed, but somewhere within XX distance, would have been another USAF 89th Airlift Wing aircraft operating as AF-1 back-up. It could have been the other VC-25, or it could have been a C-20 or C-37 (Gulfstream IV/V).

Thanks /-/oolie, I thought I saw something on Dicovery Channel once about fighter escorts, I saw "Dubya" fly in to Moffett a couple of times, I wasn't at Moffett, just miles away in AF-1's flight path and there were F-16's up. Sock [/quote] [last edit 3/23/2009 1:31 AM by sockonit - edited 1 times]
