As Amateur hinted, it's the former Marine Corps Air Station (Master Jet) El Toro.

The airfield area has been used a lot over the past 10 years or so for auto race type activity.

I've been there but I don't have any pictures! Arrggg! There was a section of building and hangars ripe for UE and I explored them twice until they locked the perimeter when they closed the golf course. I went back the other side but security stopped me as I drifted off course from the college on the west side.

Transforming El Toro into Great Park a slow process

By SEAN EMERY
THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
Thursday, July 2, 2009

IRVINE - The transformation from a stark military base to a lush Great Park
is still a work in progress a decade after the shuttering of El Toro, but the
recent completion of park designs has local leaders promising to soon move
from the drawing table to the bulldozer.

Orange County voters in 2002 ended a contentious decade-long fight for the
future of the El Toro base, scrapping plans for a commercial airport in favor
of the ambitious Great Park.

Lennar Corp. purchased the bulk of the El Toro land in 2005, giving Irvine
the 1,347-acre Great Park property, along with $200 million in developer
fees, in return for the rights to build residential, commercial and retail
space around the property.

As the ensuing housing downturn delayed Lennar's plans, Great Park leaders
focused their attention on the project's design, hiring Ken Smith to prepare
a comprehensive vision for the park.

By 2008, Great Park leaders came under fire from critics questioning the pace
of park development.

Park leaders responded by opening a 27.5-acre preview park and kicking off a
series of concerts, dances and special events that drew more than 40,000 in
its first year.

Park leaders with much fanfare earlier this year signed off on Smith's
comprehensive park design, which includes active sports fields, cultural
meeting places, agricultural fields, natural landmarks and protected
ecological environments.

Park leaders a month later laid the groundwork for actual construction by
setting aside $61 million for the first wave of park construction, which is
expected to include a 500-acre swath of sports fields, community gardens,
farm land and a man-made lake.

In three and a half years, more than $100 million has been spent on the park.
A $97 million 2009-10 fiscal year budget is expected to leave about $33
million in unallocated funds in Great Park coffers.

But the Great Park's long-term future is still unclear. Promised sports
fields have not yet materialized, the cost of the project has risen from $1.2
billion to $1.4 billion, and city officials have yet to finalize with Lennar
an updated development agreement key to future park financing

Meanwhile, Navy officials continue to move forward with their
multimillion-dollar, decades-long effort to remove toxic leftovers from the
base. The cleanup, which focuses on both Lennar and city-owned portions of El
Toro, includes the removal of TCE, the capping of former landfills, and the
patching of leaks from aging sewer lines.

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.
