All this "don't leave anything but footprints, don't take anything but photos" stuff is swell, but how about this one - "don't take the media on tours".

No prob!

edit: Dow's like the ''charrue des explorateurs'', it's impossible to lock it tightly. Maybe you're just one more urban tourist in this city.

Ho Hi. I haven't read anything from you in forever and then - BANG! you slam Controle-Man. Hmm...

Last I did, I found a complex of 60 soviet abandoned buildings in Germany and two days before, I was playing with human bones with Controle_man 30 meters under Paris.

What have YOU explored lately? The Dow?

Some people like media exposure, some people don't.

I'm not sure that attacking him on his exploration record is a good thing to do.

I haven't explored "60 soviet abandoned buildings in Germany" or "played with human bones 30 meters under Paris" lately, mostly due to the fact that I am a full time university student and, being a student, I don't have the money for a trip to Europe.

Does that make me a bad explorer ?

There is a 3meter by 10 meter hole in the wall, you call that closed? There will always be entrance to the dow, even after some idiots throwed bricks from the roof.
Anyway, its soon gonna be transformed into condo...
I think its a good idea to show other people what urban exploring is, so we are not mistaken with vandals or graffiti artists.

Maybe, but I've found that the people who complain the loudest about media exposure are often the ones who explore the least.

As for Dow, it's no big secret that the place gets frequented by all types of people. An article in The Mirror will change nothing at all.

The thing that gets me is that people that are keen usually at throwing a rock at explorers that speak to the medias are the ones that are the biggest (or at least seems like) armchair explorers.

Less talking, more walking is all I'm saying.

Very highly unlikely anything will change. There are community groups that distribute petitions, do interviews in the media, and hold street concerts in order to get a little necessary change on their street and it is next to impossible to get the time of day with someone at City Hall.

Chances are more than excellent that anyone involved with Dow is even reading Mirror are very slim. They don't give a shit. When the time comes to make some money they will act. In the meantime, they don't give a shit.

Sometimes hard to believe that these locations are so insignificant to the people that own them, isn't it?

God it's like there is only one place to explore in this big city, have you seen my latest post on “Déchéance a Westmount”, I'm not talking about some boondocks place here.... even the Queen of Westmount has “Exploration Urbaine” to be made...

so as Maze said... Out you go and explore...

Cheers

Tu m'a éclairé Aristocartototo! Fuck off.

For anyone who's only vaguely aware of how the Montreal UE community works, I might understand how this article looks like some pompous ego trip. But anyone who's met controleman only once will agree he's the most modest guy out there. If for some reason, the journalist thought it'd be a good idea to put controleman's big hairy face on 2 out of 4 pictures, it sure wasn't his idea. Remember that a journalist that wants to write an article about UE will always end up sending tons of emails. In fact, I'm quite happy that controleman stood up for this and decided to bring that Mirror guy at the Dow instead of some prick emptying fire extinguishers at an active warehouse of something.

I find it quite hilarious how worked up people get about media attention. I imagine that most of us learned about UE through some form of media. Whether it was a zine, website, or newspaper. Putting freely accessible information about urban exploration into the infosphere is what most of us, um, do. So decrying it just because it involves a newspaper is pretty silly.

I find the paranoid keep-everything-secret mentality that has developed in our community over the last few years disappointing. I mean, I agree that discretion is important with things like entrances, but I think a lot of people really blow media attention out of proportion.

This is a chance that this article was realized with the contribution of controleman ... Just imagine the result if Erick Leijon would have done the interview with a person improvised urban explorer!

I think that the article sheds a light on the hobby and the positive aspects of it. From the public's point of view, it says, "We mean no harm". From a property owner's point of view, it says, "Lock it up tight. We're a liability to your insurance."

I can't say it was a negative article or that we should be quick to criticize ControlMan. If it wasn't him, it would have been some other UE.

Bonne exploration
