| | Peter Cooper Glue Factory Oak Creek < on 11/26/2008 4:46 AM >
| | | The old Peter Cooper Glue factory stationed just off lake Michigan and only 15 miles south of Milwaukee has been abandon since 1985. Though the place has been long since gutted, and now is host to much activity; it remains a fun place to explore, and a great starter site of fellow urban explorers. Going off of the recent snow fall and the many tire tracks and foot prints, at best guess a few cars and many individuals have been there within the past 72 hours. This added to our eagerness to check the place out, and with the findings of two dumpsters, ( one sealed for asbestos dumping ) It looks like the old factory will be torn down within the upcoming years. I know for sure that the Oak Creek police check on it nightly as I have almost been caught on a few occasions driving down the service road to scout the place out. With this form of security, it does not surprise me there are many tags, and the inside of the factory is being gutted out. ( Though not shown in the photos, whole rooms were actually sealed off with plastic due to the current removal of asbestos, most likely by the owners. ) I have a small photo tour posted below. I am new to the art of photography, and only have a powershot A540 so please be lenient on the craftiness of the angles. ( I know that this site has already been listed in the archives, but I hope a different perspective and some new angles will add to the knowledge base on this site. )
Also, please give user nafangosauce credit for this as well for he was with me during the explore.

| | | nice to see more recent photos of the place. i see some newer graffiti, haha. that's interesting that there is plastic for asbestos removal, and that they're finally making steps towards tearing it down. we went there a few times when i was in school in milwaukee. that was always one of the low risk explorations, interesting to hear they've stepped up police presence too. thanks for the update!

| | | yea, I'm sort of mad that I didn't get any pic's of the plastic they had covering a lot of the rooms. I still like the place though. Was shocked at how wide open a lot of it is.

| | | So, there is that main building, but then there is that little building as well. Is that all plasticed off? Did you go to the other spot up the road (which actually looks more like a glue factory than this building)? I think that one is kinda fun too, but empty. I was just wondering if they're doing the same thing to it.

| | | I figured I would add a visual aid so that we both know what we are talking about. In the first pic, the only place that we checked out was the one labelled glue factory, The one labelled steel plant still had lights on, ( not in the building, but parking security type ones ) We were not sure if it was abandoned, and if so, for how long. The random building on the top of the picture I believe is still being used, so we tried to stay as far from it as possible. In the second picture, We went into the office building, The actual factory, and the warehouse. The office doesn't have much of anything in it, and the first floors of the factory don't either ( except for the dumpsters ) The only areas that are plastic'd off are the upper levels. Even though we were not daring enough to tempt fate on any of the cat walks, we did venture all the way up to the third level and caught the sun set. On the third floor, all of the vents and shafts leading to the second floor are plastic'd off as well as the railing areas. I'm assuming this is just to contain the asbestos as much as possible. ( even though when we first came across it, we all instantly thought "meth lab" ) The warehouse building is really just wide open, would be a cool place to make a movie though. Has sort of a fast and the furious storage place type of feel. Anyways, we only stayed about an hour, and didn't really have time to investigate the other buildings down depot. Hope to sometime in the future though.

| | | I don't think Wabash Alloys ( Steel Plant ) is still in use. I think it was shut down in 1991? I saw a bunch of pix of the inside. Its full of things. Its all sealed up.

Very cool man. Thanks for the info, me and my crew will have to check it out next time we are around. When we drove past, I was planning to do some research on Wabash Alloys, but just never got around to it. It looked fairly non operational, just the fact that the parking lights still come on means someone is footing the bill.

| | | place is pretty sweet ( the link worked ) The author is.. interesting to say the least ( no offence by any means ) I hope to get in there one of these days, its just picking the right time. Their are several high trafficked bars right across the st, so it may be hard to get in there at night, but who likes going during the day, honestly.

| | | An associate of mine is shooting a movie there and got permission from the owner of the property to film there. The Hynite building is currently being torn down as they have recently finished asbestos abatement. I had a chat with the construction crew there when we went for location scouting. Supposedly the owner wants to turn the property into a casino. The other buildings on the property are all abandoned as well. This is probably one of my favorite locations... I will be sad when it's gone. http://www.scribd....8mazv1ta40ojnw2ui9

So you have permission to shoot a film in the glue factory? that is awesome. The link that you posted, when was that dated?, because there are many recent tire tracks back there. And for the steel factory, do the locals really not care that much about the place that you can just walk in? If so, that is awesome, and I am very eager to check it out.

| | | Thanks for the update. The steel plant had active security a few years ago when we were there (we thought it was abandoned then). keep an eye for fresh tracks in the snow.
I was also partially talking about a building not on your image that is abandoned as well: http://maps.google...,0.004828&t=h&z=18 It has huge spots for vats and what not. I'm not sure if you've been here or not, but might be worth checking. I was curious if they were plastic-ing off this building too. [last edit 11/30/2008 11:36 PM by jhota - edited 2 times]

| | | The entire property, from Depot Road. north (Except the bar/house) to the South Milwaukee Water Treatment Facility is abandoned. The link I posted was from May of 2008. I'm not so sure about the Wabash Alloys plant to the south of Depot Road, every time I have been in the area it seems active... Anyway, I can only guess that the recent tracks in the area are either from the film crew, or the construction workers taking down the Hynite building. I'd post the pictures I have from when they were filming there but I signed an agreement not to release them until principle photography was completed. Supposedly the owner of the glue factory "Googles" the name on a weekly basis to see who has been exploring it and posting about it. You might want to bring a respirator, though, lest the bullies will give you a lecture on Asbestos: http://www.flickr....rfilms/3073170560/
