snow means constant water melting and a lot of ice. Which both or either or is a bad combo in drains.

It's not bad really. You'd be surprised how reasonable the temperature can be down there in the middle of the winter. It stays pretty consistent underground regardless of the time of year.

Winter draining is great. Definitely don't stop just because theres some snow on the ground.

Just try to stay dry. The trudge back to the car is pretty damn unpleasant in wet jeans and socks when it's -20c outside.

It is pretty warm in the drains in the winter time. The first time I went in the winter I had to take off my coat because it was too warm

Definitely take someone with you. It's good advice for draining in general, and I'd imagine probably more so in an icy tunnel. Besides, it's always more fun with a friend (or random hobo stranger off the street)

It might be more unpleasant and dangerous, however draining in the winter provides features in the drain that would otherwise not be be there; such as ice formations and frozen waterfalls.

I did around 20 drains during Toronto's winter of 2005/06, had a fuckin rad time, so many ice formations.

The biggest problem i had with winter draining was that in between drains the legs of my camera tripod would freeze and id be unable to extend or shorten the legs until i got into the warmer insides of the next drain.

That n the fact Manhole lids freeze shut.

Drain now.
Learn where any potential hazards are now.
And then for a different effect ... go into the same drain at wintertime.

I just did a short drain last Thursday night; I've misplaced my camera ...again... somewhere around this sty I call my room... I'm going back sometime next week ... I'll post pics later. =D

oh you may want to invest in a pair of these:

http://www.cabelas...1a&_requestid=8303

I ice fish a lot and we (me and my dad) have a few pairs but don't even bother with them anymore... I can run on bare ice no problem (look kinda retarded doing it though)

I think it'd be the angle of the drain+ice that'd be a problem.

just a suggestion but go when the weather is around 00-20 degrees Fahrenheit there shouldn't be any snow melt and it should still stay warm enough that you wont freeze your ass off...

"No risk, no reward, no fun."
"Go all the way or walk away"
escensi omnis...

Good idea about those ice things you put on your boots/shoes. I also plan to go draining this winter (for the first time). Some great advice, thanks!

I haven't been draining before and wanted to know precautions about winter draining for a place like CA. Here in Sac we don't get snow we get a lot of rain; how long should i wait to go draining after it rains? thanks

Make try to make sure there wont be any rain while you are inside, check the water level yourself before you go in.
