| | New UE'r, looking for an easy, low pressure exploration in LA area < on 8/30/2008 10:16 AM >
| | | Hi, I am new to these forums and this sub community. I am not quite sure if this belongs in the rookie forum or here, but I figured I'd put it here due to location specific needs. I am a new UE'r. I am trying to get into the life style despite having panic attacks (trying to not let them rule my life) and was looking for some low pressure, hopefully unguarded started places near LA where I could dip my feet in. I was considering Linda Vista hospital in Boyle Heights to start but I was not sure if it was a little too intense for a first time. Any suggestions?

| | | Linda Vista is too high profile for a first timer. Even i wont go there. Check out all the old military stuff around SoCal for starters.

| | | I would say the old military stuff. Just try and meet up with some locals. Its easier going somewhere with someone who has been there before.

| | | Try the "sunken city" in San Pedro. It used to be a street until the cliff eroded and it was ruined. I think there's a parking lot nearby. Here's a picture(not mine).
You might also try the bunkers at nearby Fort MacArthur

| | | If you do not mind a longer drive, you can head to a location out on the Salton Sea. Elrais mentioned the "Sunken City" in San Pedro, but there is also a "Sunken City" at Salton Sea. It is not located in the database. It is off highway 111. I made a whole day of it. This location is a true sunken city. Have fun finding it.

Thanks for posting this. I'm in the same boat..it seems that exploring in the midwest/eastern part of the country is a bit more fruitful. People leave shit and never come back, while in SoCal everything is cleaned out immediately. I found that the Rodeo Grounds commune in Topanga Canyon was pretty cool, but I went there a year and a half ago. I don't know what's still around. It's just off of Rodeo Grounds Lane. I think the entrance to the commune will be on your left and there's a kind of man-made overhand you walk under. | | | I know this might seem dumb to you (maybe not), but why not try a couple of L.A. Mausoleums? I know this isn't truly trespassing, going in some industrial wasteland, type explore... but there are plenty of old Mausoleums in East Los Angeles/Hollywood that are fun to explore. Sometimes doors are unlocked and you can find catalogs of the deceased and sometimes if you're lucky, you'll find the crematorium unlocked too. Maybe graveyards/mausoleums are too morbid for some people, but everytime I go on my explore, I go alone...I'm the only person in the mausoleum (other than a groundskeeper or two sometimes) and it's fun to walk around and figure stuff out. Just be careful because some East L.A. mausoleums have cameras throughout the mausoleum and if you fuck around with something you're not supposed to, the security guards will come and check you out. All of my explores have been me with free reign of the place. Just me wandering amongst the remains of the dead. It's really fun. And the cool thing is, it's not illegal to wander around a mausoleum and if you're caught in an area you're not supposed to be in (like that crematorium) you could always use the whole "I got lost" excuse. Some 60 year old groundskeeper isn't going to call the cops or security on you for being lost. Most of them don't even care that you're there. Just don't look like some suspicious idiot and you'll be fine. What I like to do is note the name on one of the crypts when I go there. So say for example I see Gertrude Steinbeck - 1938-2002. Then if somebody questions while I'm there, I just say I'm visiting my Grandma Gertie... "When did she die?" they might ask..."She passed away 6 years ago. Though I must say, that even though I do this to cover myself. I have not ONCE been asked what I'm doing there. Not even when I ended up in the crematorium. All I said was, "Sorry, I'm in the wrong area" and went back upstairs.

| | | Yes, I've heard much of Edwards...China Lake's supposed to be fun too. In all seriousness though, when I was passing through SoCal in 2003, the power plant in Bakersfield looked fun, and Kelso (South of Baker, CA) was a blast. It's a ways out there, but the sights in Kelso are well worth the trip for a peek into the days of the Old West.

| | | Hey guys moron me has been here for three months and haven't clicked on the map haha! Actually think I might have once a few months before I signed up but forgot. I've just been posting in the photography threads. Anyway I'm in the Toluca Lake/North Hollywood area still looking to venture out on my first exploration, I've done a few things on my own already but nothing too great. Not sure if I can even call them explorations. Thought I'd pop into this thread and say hi to my local friends too! Rawk on! Joe [last edit 1/16/2009 6:33 AM by urbanjoe - edited 1 times]

| | | Mines are relatively low pressure, but don't let your guard down. In a mine you will be concerned with "Man vs. Nature" rather than "Man v. Man." Mines are in rural areas, so you will have to look out for wildlife. A trip to a mine can become high pressure very quickly if you blunder into a rattler or stick your hand into a black widow's web. Bats live in old mines, but they are generally harmless. But in general, animals will respect you if you respect them. The mines themselves are the biggest worry. I would suggest reading the practice and theory sections on tunnels, as the dangers are similar. Remember that unless you bring it, there is no light in a mine. I don't mean to scare you off from exploring a mine. But if you think safety first and go prepared you will have a much better time. Being unprepared and not being able to go in, or going in anyway and getting lost, is not fun at all. BE CAREFUL AND GO SLOW!
