Manhole mystery: How did dead man take his fatal plunge?
Outremont Death. Passersby find body in early morning

BRETT BUNDALE
The Gazette

Friday, August 01, 2008

The circumstances surrounding the death of a 26-year-old Mont-real man found in an open manhole in Outremont yesterday morning remain unclear, but police aren't ruling anything out.

"Everything is possible," said Montreal Constable Anie Lemieux. "We don't know whether he stumbled accidentally into an open manhole, was pushed in, or removed the manhole cover in search of a lost object then fell in head first."

Forensic experts were called to the scene to investigate the incident, which occurred in an alley between two apartment blocks on Querbes St. just south of Van Horne Ave., near a construction site.

The cause of death will be determined once results from an autopsy are obtained, but the body had no signs of violence that would lead police to believe there was criminal activity involved, Lemieux said.

Neighbours in the area say they heard shouting around 5 a.m., but police only received a call at 7:15 a.m., Lemieux said.

Santaninho Fernandes, who delivers newspapers for The Gazette in the area, said a man approached him between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m.

"He said he thought he saw a hand coming out of the manhole," Fernandes said.

"I looked across the street and I could see that the cover was off the manhole, and there was a cat looking inside. So I said to the guy, 'Why don't you go look?' When he came back over he looked very shaken up and he said something like, 'I think he's dead.' I wasn't sure whether to believe him, so I told him to call 911."

It's possible he fell headfirst but tried to stop his fall with one arm, Constable Lynn Labelle said.

It's no one from the drainers board. I don't even think there's anything large enough in that area worth exploring. Still shitty news though. I always worry that someone's going to fall into a manhole that we've opened while we're underground. We do our best to secure things, but it's still a concern.

I don't get it, you don't close the manhole after the last person got into ?
Or maybe you've got to use SRT in the absence of rungs ?

If the cover was exceedingly heavy, I guess you'd need to leave it open (and pray nobody closed it on you).

Manholes here are very hard to close from under because of the weight, the way they are bumpy under and because of a security grate tied inside by a chain that comes between the lids and the rungs which make an important obstacle so it's almost impossible to open from below or even to reach the cover..So we use a hardy false cover to close it (a car could pass on it) easy enough to lift from under so we can put the security grid in place. And we always choose manholes that are completely out of the way.And we make sure that the replacement cover is impossible or at least difficult to lift from above.

They usually have rungs but it happened few times ( like today) where the rungs broke under our feet like tiny pieces of dry wood ! Scary !

Those that have no rungs are in the middle of the drain ceiling but the water level is often so high and the current usually quite important,it would be hard to rappel down and not being pulled away before landing I think..but forget it they are in the middle of the streets anyway !

Why so ? More difficult to lift than the original one ? The "tortoise" covers in France are still very heavy to lift.

Merci

Another thing that poses a problem here is that there's usually a secondary safety lid containing two cross bars sitting a few inches beneath the main lid. When both of these things are in place, it makes it impossible to use your back to get things open again from underneath. Unfortunately this second piece is usually chained to the side of the chamber so there's no quick way of getting rid of it. We're usually forced to put it back into its original position and hope that no one comes by and puts the original lid back on top of it while we're still underground.

Some of us from Paris use their foots to open the lid from the well, but I guess it wouldn't work here from the description of difficulty you gave to me.

Gritty you are

Yeah, actually.. I keep meaning to try that technique. I think there'd probably be enough space in between the crossbars to get my legs through. I also figure it'd be a good thing to know how to do in the off chance that something does get closed on us or if we need to be able an emergency exit somewhere else.
