| | San Jacinto Peak Emergency Shelter < on 6/30/2008 1:52 AM >
| | | I climbed San Jacinto Peak yesterday, and ran into this empty emergency shelter near the peak. It wasn't occupied, and therefore was abandoned and I do believe qualifies. According to the above linked article, it was built by a central European in the 1930's and is available for anyone needing its protection. Although some of the supplies seem to indicate an alternate use, the shelter would definitely be the place to stay in a storm. Regards

| | | Looks pretty cool. That's cool that all the emergency supplies stay put. The 10,000+ ft elevation must keep all the dickheads out. How far was this place from the trailhead?

Not enough to keep all the dickheads out. I see a bunch of empty water bottles, an empty bud can and evidence of somebody lighting shit on fire. I've been on enough hikes to know that even avid hikers are litterbugs. When I was on my last hike I ran into a ranger who reminded us to pack our garbage out, to which we replied, "Oh of course we would do that." to which she replied, "you'd be amazed how many people don't and just throw their bottles when they're done with them."
People are weird. |

About 5 and a half miles. Who ever was packing in beer must have been really dedicated.

Haha, I don't think I would eat any of that shit unless I was in a true emergency situation. I just naturally don't trust people. I could see someone taking a piss on that chex mix and then getting a laugh thinking somebody would eat it. Damn, what's wrong with my brain? Is it normal to think those types of things?

Dude, somebody poisoned Tylenol to try and kill people for no reason at all. I can certainly see someone screwing with the emergency supplies for the same lack of a reason. If you've ever worked in the food business, you know what happens in some kitchens to customer food. I'm just sayin.......

| | | I spent a night on top of Notch Mountain in a shelter that looked a lot like this one. We did a night hike so that we could see the sun come up on the adjacent mountain, Mount of the Holy Cross, one of the 54 14ers in Colorado. It was pretty awesome to see it, but sleeping at 12,000 feet was uncomfortable and I don't think any of us got a good night's sleep, most likely due to the unfamiliar thinner air.
