| | | Posted by Rockinbuss I was watching that episode of Cities Of The Underworld and was pretty excited to see Fort MacArthur on there. I was also interested in the subway they were talking about. I didn't get to finish the segment though. Anyone know anything about that?
|
err, it is my understanding that it is a new episode and is airing tonight for the first time.

| | | so far i'm not too impressed with the episode. they're misrepresenting quite a bit -- could be bad writing, or just a lack of technical understanding of the sites.

| | | I want my hour back. sigh. [edited] and Snordhol; I actually felt the Fort MacArthur segment was the best part. I haven't been to the site, but thought the curator did a good job. [last edit 12/9/2008 6:05 AM by Aleksandar - edited 1 times]

| | | Since it was on TV tonight I will tell: Under the City Hall (100 feet) is a nuclear bunker converted to the Emergency Bunker. It also houses the traffic nerve cell for the city. When something like a earthquake happens, the BRAIN is here. Hotel area has over 70 miles of service tunnels used as speak easys during prohibition. However, you need permission from a local bar owner to access it. Also, something about LA massive abandon subway system under a condo. I know LA has a lot of "hollow buildings" that house oil wells too. All this info is common knowledge now due to that tv show

Yeah, I was surprised at the part when he actually went farther into the bunker than the curator guy. Usually the host doesnt explore the places in depth. Also the City Hall bunker with the streetlight control center was pretty cool.

| | | Hey all, thought I'd bring this back up because I took a stroll through these tunnels today. They are actually relatively easy to access with multiple entrances above ground and inside several city buildings. I entered through the loading dock at the Hall of Records and walked straight in, then took it through an underground parking garage to the LA Superior Court building. On my way back through the Records building I dropped down to sub-level 3 and found hallways lined with shelves and court records dating back to the 1950s, and even opened a filing cabinet to find marriage licenses from the 1860s!

Those tunnels are different, but good find all the same! The tunnels you were in are more recent, and connect many of the civic buildings in the area. The other tunnels are older, and connected many of the hotels in old los angeles. edited for clarity: SirJinx's original post sounds like the civic tunnels, which you were in. The "Cities of the Underworld" episode referenced different tunnels, though, in a different part of LA. [last edit 2/19/2009 2:10 AM by Aleksandar - edited 1 times]

| | | Posted by SirJinx At one point they went into an older part of the building and found a giant locker room that hadn't been opened in years.
|
Unfortunately, this is gone now. Some of us were there not long ago and covered every square inch of every floor. Would have been awesome though.

| | | I've got to say a big thanks to those who helped me explore these tunnels and the judicial building today. When I was about to give up hope finding an entrance you guys kept pushing. One unlocked door turned into payday. Living in downtown I would love to see what else runs beneath my apartment.

Wow, wow, wow. The white building in the photos of 123 S. Fig is where I live and we took pictures from at the helipad. Of course it's about 15 stories taller now.
