You'll Love it at Levitz! This location was recently abandoned (I'm actually not quite convinced it is all that abandoned, you know . . . . with all the lights on and such) and in pristine condition. The looters have yet to tear the place to shreds and we will be heading back soon for more fun.

You will find below a few highlights of the outing. For the rest, please refer to the following album.

so yeah. levitz went out of business recently and was purchased by a company to liquidate their assets. They stopped opperations a month or so ago after the bulk of their merchandise was sold (at like 80% off). The liquidator probably still owns the company and due to it's location in huntington beach it will probably be converted into part of the bella terra shopping mall.

but all's in good fun. it looks like the place is cleaned out and would probably be badass for capture the flag or a roller disco.

. . . due to it's location in huntington beach it will probably be converted into part of the bella terra shopping mall . . .

Bella Terra was originally redeveloped by the city along with its previous owners with the intent of marketing the land to private investors. In 2005 it was sold for just under a quarter billion dollars.

It would be awesome to see the Levitz land redeveloped, but I hardly see this happening anytime soon. First off, Monkey Wards stands between the land Levitz used to occupy and Bella Terra, and it remains completely undeveloped. The current plan is to demolish the two remaining buildings and build high density housing, not unlike that found in the Irvine Spectrum, but the ground breaking date is no where in sight. Additionally, a lightly used (but still active) Union Pacific rail line cuts the two properties in half and would remain the biggest barrier towards integration of two.

In short, nothing is going to happen for a while in the realm of redevelopment.

Back to Levitz twice more in as many days. The motion sensors did pick up our presence (judging by the little red LED lights atop the sensors), but there was no response. I took video of the place (look under the Part Trios gallery) to give everyone a better sense as to the size of the building. We'll probably go back once more and get some shots from the roof.

For the rest of the shots, please see the two referenced galleries.

Man the lights being on and the water still running gave this place a weird vibe. We definitely have to get to the roof

Freeside, your looking at El Finche. No one would ever consider me 'authorized personnel'

Yesterday, I made my 4th and potentially final visit to the roof of the Huntington Beach Levitz. Unfortunately vandals have left their mark, and much of the glass inside the store is now broken. I guess the buildings timely deterioration was all but inevitable, it's just sad to see it go.

As usual, please see the following album for the rest of the photos.

I loved the picture of the faded montgomery wards building. Taking a picture of a defunct retailers building from the top of another defunct retailers building is oddly pleasing to me.
